Haley, Ragazzo Help Club team to US Youth Soccer National Title
July 31, 2012 | Women's Soccer
Princeton rising sophomores Jessica Haley and Gabrielle Ragazzo helped their Clay County SOL (Fla.) club team to the US Youth Soccer U-19 national title on July 29 in Rock Hill, S.C.
Clay County SOL defeated the Massachusetts-based Scorpions Elite 2-1 in penalty kicks after each team scored during a full overtime period. As Clay County SOL won 7-6 on the tie-breaking kicks, Ragazzo's goal made the difference.
Over three pool-play games between the four regional champions, Haley scored twice, getting the tying goal in the 91st minute against the eventual finalist Scorpions in a game that ended 1-1. She scored again two days later against the California-based So Cal Blues Dodge, putting her team up 2-0 in the 57th minute in an eventual 2-1 win. The goals helped Haley to a spot on the all-tournament top-11 team.
Clay County SOL was the only team among the four regional champions to win two pool-play games, going 2-0-1 to earn a finals berth.
Haley and Ragazzo are two of 11 returning Tigers who scored a goal during the 2011 season. Princeton's 2012 campaign will begin August 31 at Roberts Stadium against 2011 College Cup semifinalist Wake Forest in the first of four home games to open the season.
