Kirby and U.S. Field Hockey Junior National Team Qualify for World Cup
September 24, 2012 | Field Hockey
Princeton sophomore Sydney Kirby and the U.S. Field Hockey Junior National Team have qualified for the Junior World Cup following the squad's third place finish at the Pan American Junior Championship Saturday in Guadalajara, Mexico. Team USA defeated Chile, 2-1, en route to the bronze medal.
"I am absolutely delighted with the result," said U.S. head coach Nick Conway. "This group of players has committed a lot to prepare to be here, missing the most challenging time of year from their collegiate programs. They've worn the jersey with pride and I am thrilled to pieces with the success that these players have earned (at) this tournament and for all the families and friends who traveled to Guadalajara and followed from home. We've achieved what we came for and for that we will go home delighted."
Kirby had two goals during the preliminary round, as the U.S. finished second in its pool play. After suffering a 6-0 loss to Argentina in the semifinals, Team USA squared up with Chile with a berth to the World Cup on the line. Chile was the only team to defeat the Americans during the group stage, 2-1, but this time it was Team USA to come out on top.
Kirby now returns to the Princeton (7-1, 2-0 Ivy) lineup after missing the Tigers last five games while in Mexico.
