For the last three seasons, Tommy Wornham has been the first name on the quarterback depth chart for the Princeton football season opener. While head coach Bob Surace will probably have two names atop that depth chart next week, there is a new era for the Princeton offense, and three underclassmen are battling to lead the charge into that new era.Sophomores Quinn Epperly and Connor Michelsen are the two favorites to at least share the top spot on the depth chart. Epperly started the 2011 season finale, rushed for two touchdowns and earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors. He rushed for 215 yards and threw for 259 while appearing in six games last season. Classmate Connor Michelsen appeared against both Brown and Dartmouth, and he completed three passes in five attempts.
Epperly is known as the stronger runner, though Surace has been impressed with his improved pass game. Michelsen is considered the more accurate passer, though Surace has liked his added mobility in the spring.
As for the likely starter? Well, as Surace expressed to Jay Greenberg of the PrincetonTigersFootball.com blog, you will probably find out as soon as the Lehigh defense does on the afternoon of Sept. 15.
Surace has talked about using two quarterbacks many times since last spring, and there is a good chance we will see that early this season. One person vying for the opportunity is Kedric Bostic, a freshman all-state quarterback from Jupiter, Fla. While Bostic lacks the experience of either Epperly or Michelsen, he has made a huge progression in the fall and shouldn't be overlooked, even if he doesn't see the field during the first month of the season.
