A week ago at Penn State, Princeton staged an amazing comeback, rallying from a second-half deficit of 20 points. Tonight's game showed why comebacks like that are so amazing, because they're really tough to do.

Princeton entered the second half down just five to Portland, but the Pilots snuffed out the only Princeton rally of the second half and left Las Vegas with a 93-79 win.

Princeton fell behind thanks in part to eight first-half turnovers that led to 15 points for the Pilots, helping Portland to a 41-36 lead at the break.

Unlike the previous three times Princeton trailed at the half this season, there would be no sustained rally. Beginning just after three minutes were gone in the second half, the Tigers scored seven straight points to take a 49-48 lead with 14:53 to play on a Spencer Weisz drive, but Portland answered with an 8-0 run in just 83 seconds to take back a seven-point advantage.

The Pilots led by as many as 18 points after that 8-0 run to take back the lead and never let Princeton within seven points.

Princeton's oft-found success from beyond the arc wasn't there against the Pilots tonight, as Princeton finished just 5-16 from distance. Portland finished eight of 15 from three, making it just the second time that Princeton's opponent had more 3-pointers than the Tigers. The other occurrence was Princeton's only other defeat, at Butler last month.

17: Princeton had 17 turnovers against Portland, leading to 24 Portland points. The 17 turnovers were a season high for the Tigers, who last had 17 turnovers at Kent State on Dec. 1, 2012.

Portland responded to Princeton's only lead of the second half by scoring eight straight points in 83 seconds after Spencer Weisz's bucket put Princeton up one at 49-48 with 14:53 to go.

• Portland improved to 2-0 against the Ivy this season, following up its 69-52 win over Columbia on Nov. 22 in Portland.

• Princeton saw its eight-game winning streak, its longest since the 2010-11 season, snapped.

• It was the first meeting between Princeton and Portland and the second straight game for the Tigers against West Coast Conference opponents after Princeton took down Pacific Friday night.

• Portland's Bryce Pressley finished with 25 points, two off the season high for a Princeton opponent.

• Portland's 93 points were the most scored against Princeton since top-ranked Duke scored 97 on Nov. 14, 2010.

• A win would have given Princeton its first tournament title since the 2000 First Merchants Classic hosted by Ball State.

• T.J. Bray (above, left) had 25 points, a career high for the senior. He matched his previous career high just three games ago at Rutgers with 23 points.

• Like Bray, fellow senior Jimmy Sherburne (above, right) set a career best, putting up 15 points to top his previous high by two.

• Princeton's nine assists tied a season low. Princeton had nine in its other defeat, at Butler.

• T.J. Bray had five assists to increase his career total to 290, remaining in seventh place on the program list for a stat that has been kept since the 1974-75 season. Marcus Schroeder '10 is next at 295 assists.

Princeton and Kent State will meet in the back end of the teams' home-and-home series on New Year's Eve at noon in Jadwin Gym. The Tigers defeated the Golden Flashes 62-50 in Ohio last season. Kent State stands at 9-2 heading into a game Saturday against Cleveland State.
