HANOVER, N.H. – Despite Kendall Peterkin's career-high 28 kills, the Princeton women's volleyball team fell short against Ivy League rival Dartmouth College, 3-2 (25-19, 25-19, 22-25, 18-25, 15-11).
Dropping the first two sets, the Tigers stormed back, securing a 25-22 decision in the third before capturing the fourth frame, 25-18. With the tiebreaker knotted at 8-8, the Big Green notched three-straight points to open up a 12-9 margin it would not relinquish.
With the loss, Princeton dropped to 9-7 on the season and 4-2 in conference play, while Dartmouth upped its record to 13-4 (4-2 Ivy League). The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 18 against Harvard University.
Jumping out to a fast start in the opening set, Princeton built a 5-0 lead on a Peterkin kill. Down 6-2, Dartmouth pieced together a 5-1 run, pulling even at 7-7 on a Tiger error. With the set still knotted at 12-12, the Big Green netted six of the game's next seven points to open up an 18-13 margin. Battling back, Princeton evened the set at 19-19 on a Cara Mattaliano spike, but six unanswered Dartmouth points helped the home team claim a 25-19 victory and 1-0 match lead.
Carrying its momentum into the second set, Dartmouth quickly rattled off seven-straight points. Later down 19-13, the Orange and Black put together a 5-3 spurt to pull within four on another Peterkin kill. Closing out the second stanza in similar fashion, Dartmouth outscored the Tigers 3-1 down the stretch to claim a 25-19 decision on a Sara Lindquist kill.
Needing a win in the third to stay alive, Princeton fought the Big Green to a 9-9 tie early in the set. Up 16-15, the Tigers scored three of the next four points to go up by three. With Dartmouth eventually trimming the deficit to one after consecutive Paige Caridi kills, Mattaliano hammered home a spike to put the Tigers back up 24-22. Thanks to a Big Green attacking error on the ensuing play, Princeton picked up a 25-22 victory to force a fourth set.
Tied at 3-3 early, the Tigers strung together a 10-4 run to go up by six. After a Kaira Lujan kill cut the margin to 16-11, Mattaliano and Peterkin put away back-to-back spikes. Still down seven at 21-14, the Big Green accounted for four of the game's next five points to suddenly pull within four. Stemming the tide, Peterkin recorded her 23rd kill to make it 23-18. After a service ace, Nicole Kincade ensured there would be a fifth set with her 10th kill of the evening.
With the tiebreak knotted at 1-1, the Tigers once again looked to Peterkin, who delivered three consecutive points. After Dartmouth answered with a 3-0 spurt of its own, Kincade put away another kill to put Princeton back on top. Down 8-7, Mattaliano found space down the middle of the Dartmouth defense, registering her 12th kill of the night.
Wasting little time responding, Caridi notched a pair of spikes, dropping her second kill just inside the endline. In front 11-9, Lindquist put away a cross-court kill, before Peterkin answered with a spike of her own. After a Lindquist block made it 14-10, Kincade tipped the ball over the Dartmouth frontline to momentarily help Princeton stave off elimination. However, moments later a Tiger block landed just outside the near sideline to seal the Big Green victory.
Hitting .293 on the match, Peterkin also had 11 digs to go with her 28 kills. Mattaliano finished with 13 kills and 15 digs, while Kincade hit .407 with 12 kills. Directing the Tiger offense, Lauren Miller dished out 54 assists while collecting 10 digs. Hitting .269 as a team, Princeton was at its best in the third and fourth sets, registering attacking rates of .344 and .469, respectively, before putting away a match-low nine kills on 29 attempts with five errors (.138) during the tiebreak.
Emily Astarita paved the way for Dartmouth with 23 kills on 52 swings with just four errors (.365). Also adding 11 digs, Astarita tied for the team lead with Stacey Benton, Julia Lau and Molly Kornfeind. Caridi finished with 21 kills and 10 digs while Stacey Benton had 51 assists.
