After Princeton's 3-1 victory over Penn Friday night in Dillon Gym, a group of young girls went running up to Kendall Peterkin and asked to have their picture taken with her. She smiled and happily obliged; after all, she was the unquestionable star of the night.
Peterkin, already a four-time Ivy League Player of the Week, made a mighty case for a fifth honor. The Ivy League leader in kills and points posted a career-high 30 kills and hit .424 to lead the Tigers to a 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-19 win over Penn. The victory ends a three-match losing streak and keeps the Tigers in the upper half of the Ivy League standings with three matches to go.
Peterkin had 24 kills through the first three sets and was a crucial force in the third, when Penn threatened to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers trailed 16-13 midway through the set, but a trio of Peterkin kills and hitting error evened the set at 18-18. Peterkin ran off the last six points on her serve, which included an ace and three kills of her own, to grab the key 25-19 win.
Senior middle Nicole Kincade and sophomore outside Cara Mattaliano both had 10 kills, while both also had key defensive performances; Kincade had a team-best three blocks, while Mattaliano had a match-high 19 digs. Sophomore setter Lauren Miller added 48 assists and 16 digs, while junior Sarah Daschbach added 14 digs.
Princeton will head back on the road next weekend, beginning Friday night at Columbia.
