WEEK 6 GAME NOTES (PDF)
Down to the Wire
Squaring off with nationally ranked No. 13 Syracuse last Sunday, the Tigers rallied from a two-goal deficit before eventually falling in double overtime, 4-3. Trailing 2-0 after a pair of early Orange goals, Princeton got on the board while playing out a penalty corner at the 35:00 mark of the first half. Carrying their momentum into the second stanza, the Tigers posted a pair of scores just 4:09 apart to suddenly take a 3-2 lead. After the Orange tied it in the 48th minute, Syracuse's Emma Russell ultimately put the visitors ahead for good with a sudden-victory goal at the 93:28 mark of the second extra session. The loss dropped Princeton to 1-4 in one goal games and 0-6 in contests where the opponent scores first.
First Time For Everything
Princeton suffered its first Ivy League loss since 2011 with a 3-2 setback against Columbia last Friday. Down 2-0 at the half against the Lions, the Tigers battled back, finding a way to tie the game in the 62nd minute. But with just 1:15 remaining in regulation, Columbia's Katie Ruesterholz netted the game winner to give the Lions their first-ever win over Princeton. The victory snapped a 17-game losing streak to the Orange and Black dating back to 1997. Columbia joins Dartmouth (2004, 2011), Cornell (2007) and Penn (2004) as the only Ivy League programs to record a victory over Princeton during head coach Kristen Holmes-Winn's tenure. The Lion win also broke the Tigers' string of 21-consecutive conference victories.
Leading the Way
In the midst of a solid senior season, tri-captain Sydney Kirby currently leads the team with 11 points on five goals and an assist. Doing most of her damage on the Tigers' penalty corners, all five of her goals in 2014 have come off of set pieces. Against No. 3 Virginia, Kirby matched a career-high with two goals. The midfielder repeated the feat for the fifth time in her career against Yale on Sept. 27. In 62 appearances since her rookie campaign, Kirby has amassed 66 points on 25 goals and 16 assists.
Walled Up
Despite the loss, junior goalkeeper Anya Gersoff turned in a strong performance against No. 13 Syracuse, matching a career-high with 12 saves. With the Orange recording 11 of their 24 shots in the two extra sessions, Gersoff made six overtime saves, including five in the first 15-minute period to help her earn a spot on the conference's weekly Honor Roll. In a 1-0 season-opening loss to then-No. 4 Duke in which the Tigers were outshot, 20-4, Gersoff also made 12 stops. In 26 career appearances, the junior has logged 1664:40 minutes in net, posting a 13-11 record with a 2.02 GAA and 0.707 save percentage.
Coming on Strong
Through Princeton's first 10 games, Maddie Copeland has already matched a career-high with five goals. Netting her first goal of the season against No. 4 Penn State on Sept. 12, she had a pair of scores in a 4-0 shutout of Dartmouth on Sept. 20. Helping to spark the Tigers' comeback against No. 13 Syracuse last Sunday, she recorded consecutive goals just 4:09 apart early in the second half. In 46 career appearances, she has posted 31 points (15G, 1A).
Closing In
Kristen Holmes-Winn sits just two wins shy of her 150th as the head coach of the Princeton field hockey program. Her 148 victories thus far rank second only to Beth Bozman (188) on the school's all-time charts. The Tigers have posted double-digit wins in all but two of her 12 seasons, including a program-record 21 victories during the team's 2012 national championship run. Going 75-5 against the Ivy League, Holmes-Winn has helped guide Princeton to 10 conference titles.
Climbing the Charts
Scoring a goal against Columbia, Allison Evans now sits just 11 points shy of becoming the ninth player in program history to reach the 100-point plateau. Currently, her combined 53 goals and assists sit 11th on the Tigers' all-time charts. In each of her three seasons, she has posted double-digit goals with a career-high 12 as a sophomore. As a freshman she finished with 27 points while amassing 57 points over the last two years.
Rivalry Renewed
Princeton is 12-11-3 all-time against Delaware. At home, the Tigers own a 7-5-1 ledger with a 5-5-1 away mark and a 0-1-1 record at neutral sites. The Blue Hens currently hold the edge in overtime games, going 2-0-2. With the two teams battling to a tie in the first two meetings in 1973 (0-0) and 1982 (1-1), Delaware took control, winning each of the next nine showdowns. After a scoreless draw in 1991, Princeton recorded its first-ever win in the rivalry with a 2-1 decision in 1992. Dropping the following season's match-up by the same score (2-1), The Tigers ripped off nine-consecutive wins of their own from 1994-2002, outscoring the Blue Hens 31-10 during that span. Delaware put the brakes on the skid in 2004 by securing a 2-0 decision. After seven-year hiatus, the programs met once again in 2012 and 2013, with Princeton emerging victorious in both outings by a combined 12-3 margin.
When Last We Met
Princeton narrowly edged out Delaware in last season's meeting in Newark, 2-1. With the Tigers notching the game's first tally in the 11th minute, the Blue Hens came up with the equalizer 6:38 into the second half. Still tied in the 63rd minute, Princeton pulled ahead for good with a goal off of a penalty corner. The Orange and Black finished with a slim 6-5 edge in penalty corners with both teams registering 10 shots. Anya Gersoff made five saves in the loss.
Scouting Delaware
Ranked 18th in the Penn Monto/NFHCA Preseason Poll, Delaware opened the year with a 4-0 loss to then-No. 12 Stanford. After three-straight wins over Pacific (2-1), Cal (3-2) and Richmond (4-1), the Blue Hens dropped their next three contests to North Carolina (5-1), Temple (5-1) and Cornell (4-2). Righting the ship, Delaware has won four of its last five outings, which included a pair of CAA victories over James Madison (6-5, 2OT) and William & Mary (5-3) last weekend. Despite surrendering a 4-2 second half lead against James Madison, the Blue Hens' Jacki Coveleski netted the game winner at 97:41 to help Delaware pull out the win. Esmee Peet had two goals, while Marjelle Scheffers and Michaela Patzner each had a goal and an assist. Delaware finished with a 19-10 shot advantage with both teams earning six penalty corners. Meghan Winesett turned in her first career hat trick in a 5-3 victory over William & Mary, while Peet tacked on a pair of scores. Pantzer currently leads the team in scoring with 18 points (6G, 6A), followed by Peet and Winesett with 16 and 15 points, respectively. Coveleski and Scheffers round out the list of Blue Hens with double-digit points with 10 apiece. Stepping in for injured goalie Emmeline Oltmans, reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Fran Orella has logged 247:18 minutes in net with a 2.55 GAA and 0.526 save percentage.
