Ptak Quiets Columbia Rally, Clinches 3-1 Volleyball Victory At Columbia
November 01, 2014 | Women's Volleyball
Brittany Ptak hadn't made an error yet, and she wasn't about to make one in the biggest situation of the match. Ptak ended a 7-0 Columbia run and put away her 11th kill on match point to clinch a 3-1 win in New York City.
Princeton swept the season series against Columbia with a 25-17, 26-28, 25-18, 25-23 win in Levien Gym, and the victory keeps the Tigers two matches back of first-place Yale with five to go in Ivy play.
A match that seemed in cruise control only minutes earlier got very tight in the late stages of the fourth set. Two straight kills by Ptak gave the Tigers a 24-16 lead, but Columbia rallied with its biggest run of the night, a 7-0 surge that included four kills from Bailey Springer. An ace by Sarah Gurbach got the Lions within one, but sophomore Lauren Miller connected with her classmate, Ptak, on a slide for the match-winning kill.
Five-time Ivy League Player of the Week Kendall Peterkin was spectacular again, recording 24 kills and 26 digs for her fifth 20-20 match of the season. Senior middle Nicole Kincade added 14 kills with only one error (.351), while Ptak hit .440 (11-0-25). Both outsides Cara Mattaliano and Kelly Matthews had eight kills apiece, while Miller paced the offense with 56 assists.
Princeton had three players with at least 20 digs. Peterkin had a team-best 26 digs, while junior libero Sarah Daschbach added 25 and Matthews had 22.
The Tigers stay in the Empire State Saturday for a 5 pm match at Cornell, one of five Princeton-Cornell matchups in Ithaca on Nov. 1 (field hockey, football, women's soccer, men's soccer, volleyball).
