Contini's Overtime Goal Leads Princeton Past Union
November 15, 2014 | Women's Ice Hockey
Box Score
If it's Friday, it must be overtime.
For the second straight week the Tigers (5-1-1, 3-0 ECAC) needed an extra session to determine the outcome. As they did in a come-from-behind win over RIT a week ago, Princeton again pulled out a win, defeating Union College, 3-2.
Sophomore Molly Contini scored the game-winning goal with 2:47 left in the extra period - after Union had tied it in the final minute of regulation - as she redirected a shot past Union senior goalie Shenae Lundberg for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Jaimie McDonell and Kelsey Koelzer, who like Contini finished with one goal and one assist in the game, had assists on the game-winner as McDonnell re-directed Koelzer's shot from the right point before Contini tipped it past Lundberg.
The Tigers have never lost to Union at Baker Rink, running their record to 11-0, but the Dutchwomen (1-9-2, 0-3 in ECAC Hockey) did not make things easy.
Despite the tough start this season and being outshot by Princeton 35-21 in regulation, Union managed to stay in the game and trailed just 2-1 in the final minute of the game.
With Lundberg pulled for an extra skater the Dutchwomen were able to pressure Princeton in the defensive zone. Senior defensemen Haley Welch sent a hard shot from the point through a crowd of people for her first goal of the year with 34 seconds left in the third to tie the game 2-2.
Unlike last Friday's win over RIT, in which Princeton fell behind 3-0 after one period before coming back for a 4-3 win, the Tigers dominated the opening period, outshooting the Dutchwomen 17-3 and taking a 2-0 lead.
After going 0-8 on the power play in last Saturday's scoreless tie with RIT, the Tigers opened the scoring on their first opportunity with the man advantage against Union.
With Kathryn Davis serving a two-minute penalty for slashing, senior defenseman Ali Pankowski stick handled the puck deep into the Union zone. Lundberg made a nice stop on Contini's stuff attempt but McDonnell was there to pounce on the rebound to open the scoring at 7:35.
The Tigers made it 2-0 at 10:57 when Koelzer unleashed a laser beam shot into the top of the net for her second goal of the season. Cristin Shanahan and Kiersten Falck assisted on the play.
Union scored the game's only second period goal when senior Christine Valente scored off assists by Nicole Russell and Brandy Streeter at 1:56. The Dutchwomen had their best period in the middle stanza, forcing much of the play but winning goalie Kimberly Newell (4-1-1) had nine of her 20 saves, to keep Princeton ahead.
The Tigers had the better of the territorial play in the third period but could not solve Lundberg until the game-winning goal in overtime.
