Shanahan's Goal Gives Princeton A Win In Overtime - Again
November 16, 2014 | Women's Ice Hockey
The Princeton women's hockey team is 3-0-1 in its first four home games this season. Well, it's actually a little more than four games.
Junior Christin Shanahan scored her fourth goal of the year with 2:42 left in overtime — tucking in a cross ice pass from freshman Kiersten Falck to complete a tic-tac-toe passing play started by senior Brianna Leahy as Princeton defeated Rensselaer 2-1 Saturday afternoon.
Princeton ran its unbeaten streak to seven games, with six wins and a tie, and ran its overtime streak to four straight games, as in all four of its games the last two weekends at Baker Rink. Princeton is now 6-1-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the ECAC.
After a scoreless tie with RIT last Saturday goals were hard to come by once again this afternoon and for a time it looked like today's game might end up the same way.
Princeton outshot the Engineers 10-2 in the first period but thanks to some nice goaltending by RPI starting goalie Kelly O'Brien (1-5-0), who finished with 27 saves, the game went into the first intermission with no score.
Sophomore Morgan Sly broke the scoreless tie with 8:09 to play in the second period — completing a beautiful passing play that started when freshman defenseman Emily Achterkirch found Audrey Potts and the sophomore put a pass on the tape of Sly's stick. The assist was the first point of Achterkirch's career in her their collegiate game while the sophomore Potts now has a goal and an assist on the year.
After being outshot 15-10 over the first two periods the Engineers came out strong in the third period and got the equalizer with 13:21 to play. Princeton goalie Kimberly Newell made the initial stop on a shot by RPI's Ali Svoboda but sophomore Laura Horwood was there to pounce on the rebound; scoring her third goal of the year.
Newell, who finished with 20 saves to raise her record to 5-1-1, came up big for Princeton in the closing minutes — particularly after Princeton took a penalty with 1:17 to play. The power play carried into overtime but the Tigers were able to kill off the penalty — setting the stage for Shanahan's heroics.
Princeton returns to Baker Rink next Friday night when it hosts St. Lawrence followed by a game against first-place Clarkson on Saturday afternoon.
