St. Lawrence Halts Princeton's Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak
November 22, 2014 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (11/21/14) - A four-goal third period gave the St. Lawrence women's hockey team a 7-3 win over Princeton to halt the Tigers' seven-game unbeaten streak.
Princeton (6-2-1, 4-1 ECAC) battled back from a 3-1 deficit to tie the game before the close of the second period. St. Lawrence (7-5-1, 4-2 ECAC) then took control, netting the next four goals.
A power-play goal by Kailee Heidersbach regained the lead for the Saints but it was just 21 seconds later before Princeton received a penalty shot as Alex Moore was called for tripping on a Cristin Shanahan break. Shanahan's shot was stopped by Carmen MacDonald and she would thwart the rest of the Tigers' efforts, finishing the game with 25 saves.
"The score doesn't necessary indicate how close a game it was," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We did a good job battling back to make it 3-3. The penalty shot was probably the turning point. If we had scored there we would have tied it up. Both teams made mistakes but they were able to capitalize on those mistakes and that was pretty much the difference."
Following the missed penalty shot, Kayla Raniwsky scored an unassisted goal at 7:39 and Brooke Webster scored an empty-net goal at 17:27 before the final goal by Sydney Bell at 18:49.
Jenna Marks put the Saints on the board with the only goal of the first period. She found an opening on the right side as two players were tangled up in front of junior netminder Kimberly Newell.
Sophomore Hilary Lloyd scored off the opening face off of the second period to tie it at 1-1. Junior Jaimie McDonell won the draw back to Kelsey Koelzer and Koelzer sent a diagonal pass to Lloyd at the top of the circle before she ripped a shot past MacDonald.
Less than a minute later the Saints regained the lead on a Jacqueline Wand redirect of a Kennedy Marchment shot. Brooke Webster redirected an Amanda Boulier shot 10 minutes later to make it 3-1.
Senior Brianna Leahy scored her first goal of the season when she popped a goal into the right corner after Shanahan had a shot from the top of the slot on a pass from freshman Kiersten Falck. Sophomore Molly Contini knotted the game at 3-3 when she scored five hole in the slot on a pass from Lloyd in the left circle after McDonell started the play in the defensive zone.
Newell made 35 saves for the Tigers, who were 0 for 4 on the power play and 3 for 4 on the penalty kill.
Princeton hosts the defending national champion Clarkson, tomorrow afternoon, at 4 p.m.
