PRINCETON, N.J. (11/22/14) - The Princeton women's hockey team answered both of Clarkson's goals in the first two periods but couldn't match the Golden Knights final goal in the third period as the No. 5 ranked squad took a 3-2 game at Hobey Baker Rink on Saturday, Nov. 22
Penalty trouble kept Princeton from taking a lead as the Tigers were called for six infractions, forcing the penalty kill unit take extra ice time. They were up to the task, killing off all six penalties.
Princeton itself was 1 for 3 on the power play, but did allow a short-handed goal on the same infraction.
"Today I thought we played really well," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We took too many penalties but did a good job of killing them off. But we couldn't figure out how to defend the 30 seconds after the penalty and were scrambling because we weren't in our lines and not knowing their positions. That is on the coach as well as the kids out there."
Clarkson was able to capitalize on the tail end of the first power play as Amanda Titus scored six seconds after the penalty expired. Erin Ambrose and Renata Fast passed the puck across the blue line and Fast ripped a shot that was redirected on the doorstep by Titus.
Sophomore defender, and leading scorer, Kelsey Koelzer knotted it at 1-1 with help from freshman Kiersten Falck, who had a two-point day, and sophomore Molly Contini. Contini poked the puck free along the boards and fed Falck up ice. Falck skated in on net and found her trailer in Koelzer as the first period ended 1-1.
The Golden Knights regained the lead with a short-handed breakaway goal by Genevieve Bannon. Senior Brianne Mahoney passed to her d-partner Ali Pankowski on the face-off win, but Pankowski got tied up with Carly Mercer and didn't receive the puck. Instead it was Bannon that collected it and skated in on goalie Kimberly Newell for the goal at 7:50.
The Tigers recovered as senior Brianna Leahy converted on that same penalty 1:23 later. Sophomore Fiona McKenna won a draw to Leahy and she passed it up the ice to Falck at the blue line. Falck steadied the puck and sent it back to Leahy who sent the puck through traffic from inside the left circle past netminder Shea Tiley.
Shannon MacAuley tallied the eventual game-winner at 4:07 of the third period when she found herself open in front of the net as players battled for puck possesion behind the goal. Mercer was able to scoop the puck free and sent it around the back and up to MacAuley who shot gloveside for the goal.
Clarkson improves to 10-4-1 and 5-1-1 in the league, as they outshot Princeton 35-17.
Newell finished the game with 32 saves, while Tiley stopped 15 shots.
Princeton, now 6-3-1 overall and 4-2 in the ECAC, hosts travel partner Quinnipiac on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 7 p.m.
