PRINCETON, N.J. – Blake Dietrick poured in a game-high 26 points to lead the Princeton University women's basketball team to an 83-54 victory over Georgetown University at Jadwin Gymnasium.
The only Ivy League team to ever start a season 8-0, the Tigers improved to 2-3 all-time against the Hoyas, dropping Georgetown to 2-7 on the year.
Locked in a five-point game at the half, Princeton opened the second stanza on a 9-2 spurt before outscoring the Hoyas 24-5 over the final 8:38. Shooting 43.3 percent (13-of-30) in the first period, Georgetown connected on just seven of its 28 field goal attempts in the second, which included a 0-for-7 clip from behind the arc.
Going 10-for-18 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe, Dietrick finished two points shy of matching her career-high of 28 set against Yale on Feb. 15, 2014. She also dished out six assists in 32 minutes of action. Alex Wheatley was an efficient 8-for-12 from the floor, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds. Annie Tarakchian chipped in with eight points and nine boards.
Getting out in transition, Dietrick netted the game's first points on a fast break off a Georgetown misfire. The Hoyas responded with six unanswered on a Katie McCormick triple and Faith Woodward three-point play.
Cutting to the basket with just over 17 minutes remaining, Wheatley converted a three-point play of her own to make it 6-5. Moments later, the junior put back an Amanda Berntsen miss to help Princeton regain the lead. With the Tigers up 9-8, Michelle Miller knocked down a triple from the left wing to extend the margin to four. Still up four with under 15 minutes to go in the first, Wheatley connected on a turnaround in the lane, capping off a 14-4 run that made it 16-10.
Battling back, the Hoyas pieced together a 6-0 spurt, pulling even at 16-16 on a Didi Burton jumper at 11:31. With the game quickly turning into a see-saw affair, the teams found themselves tied five times over the final 10:49 of the half with the lead changing hands on three occasions.
Knotted at 35-35 with 1:44 remaining in the period, Princeton closed out the frame on a 5-0 run. Dietrick got the spurt started with a layup at 1:30. After Berntsen converted 1-of-2 from the charity stripe inside of a minute, Dietrick found Wheatley in the paint for a bucket just before the buzzer.
Starting the second half off strong, the Tigers netted nine of the first 11 points coming out of the intermission. Dietrick got things started with a three-point play before a Dorothy Adomako layup trimmed the Hoya deficit to 43-37. After a pair of Dietrick free throws, Wheatley once again connected down low to make it 47-37. Dietrick capped off the run with a pull-up jumper at 18:12.
With a pair of Woodard free throws pulling Georgetown within 10 at 8:48, Tarakchian converted a three-point play the old-fashioned way to make it 62-49. The next time down the floor, the junior drew a foul and went 1-for-2 from the charity stripe to pad the Tiger cushion. After a pair defensive stops, Dietrick drained a triple from the right wing to stake the home team to a 66-49 advantage with 6:58 on the clock.
An Adomako putback on the other end momentarily had the Hoyas within 15, but the Tigers answered by scoring 17 of the game's final 20 points. Holding Georgetown to 34.5 percent (20-of-58) shooting and a 14.3 percent (2-of-14) showing from three, Princeton finished with a decisive 52-35 rebounding edge. Outscoring the visitors 38-28 in the paint, the Orange and Black had a 15-11 advantage in second chance points, while the Tiger reserves finished with a 26-6 scoring edge over their Hoya counterparts.
Princeton will look to make it nine-in-a-row when it travels to Michigan on Tuesday, Dec. 9.
