Lazo, Stella Sweep Ivy League Weekly Women's Soccer Awards
September 15, 2014 | Women's Soccer
An unbeaten week has helped Princeton senior Lauren Lazo and freshman Beth Stella sweep the Ivy League's weekly awards.
In earning Ivy League Player of the Week honors, Lazo scored three goals in a 1-0-2 week for Princeton, converting a penalty kick in Friday night's tie against La Salle and assisting on Stella's tying goal. Sunday afternoon against Villanova on ESPNU, she scored both goals, including one with 64 seconds left in regulation, to help Princeton win 2-1.
Tuesday, Lazo added the ECAC Player of the Week award to her honors for the week.
Stella earned her first points as a Tiger to be named Ivy League Rookie of the Week. Against La Salle Friday night, Stella scored the game-tying goal in the 79th minute, and against Villanova, Stella had the pass that set up Lazo's header for the soon-to-be game-winning goal.
The award is the fourth Ivy Player of the Week honor of Lazo's career, putting her in select company within the program's history. Only Esmeralda Negron '05 (five) and Jen Hoy '13 (four) had as many as four Ivy weekly honors.
The award is the first of Stella's career, and it is the second straight year that Princeton has achieved an early-season sweep of the Ivy weekly awards. Current sophomore Tyler Lussi won both on Sept. 9, 2013. The last time Princeton swept the award with two different players was Sept. 12, 2011, when Lazo was the Rookie of the Week and Hoy the Player of the Week.
Princeton will look to keep its unbeaten streak going this weekend during a two-game trip to Virginia with a Friday night game at Richmond and a Sunday afternoon game at William & Mary.
