Welcome Home: Princeton will make one last regular-season visit to head coach Julie Shackford's home state of Virginia. This will be Princeton's 12th trip to the state, the last nine of which have come under Shackford. The Tigers last visited Virginia for a 2011 game at William & Mary. Shackford is an alumna of William & Mary and a native of Northern Virginia.
Weekly Honors: Lauren Lazo was both the Ivy League and ECAC Player of the Week for her three-goal, one-assist performance, having a hand (or, more accurately, foot) in all four of the team's goals on the week. She scored first against La Salle on a penalty kick and assisted on soon-to-be Ivy League Rookie of the Week Beth Stella's goal to re-tie the game at 2-2. Against Villanova, she scored both goals in a 2-1 win, including the last one with 64 seconds left. The Ivy honor is the fourth Player of the Week award of Lazo's career, pulling her even with former teammate Jen Hoy '13 and one behind current assistant coach Esmeralda Negron '05 for the all-time Princeton record for Ivy Player of the Week honors.
The Series: Princeton and Richmond have met only three times and only once involving any of the current players. Richmond won the first meeting 3-1 in 2000 on Richmond's field, but Princeton won the rematch in 2006 2-0 at Penn. The teams played again last season and again Princeton won 2-0 on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium, with Lauren Lazo and Tyler Lussi scoring less than four minutes apart early in the second half. Darcy Hargadon picked up the shutout in goal.
One More Time: Princeton head coach Julie Shackford announced that the 2014 season, her 20th leading the team, will be her final one. With the win over Villanova, Shackford is now three wins away from her 200th victory with Princeton, already having outpaced any other soccer coach in Princeton men's or women's program history. Shackford has led the team to six Ivy League championships and an Ivy-record eight NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by the team's run to the 2004 NCAA College Cup semifinals.
The Coaches: Against Richmond, 20-season Princeton coach Julie Shackford will face a counterpart who has been in his role almost as long as she has been in hers, with Peter Albright in his 19th season leading the Spiders. Both have led their teams deep into the NCAA tournament, with Shackford's NCAA semifinal run in 2004 and Albright having taken Richmond to the Round of 16 in 2002.
Rookies: A total of six freshmen have already started games this season for the Tigers, including three (Natalie Larkin, Alessia Azermadhi, Katie Pratt-Thompson) who have started all four games. In the 2013 opener, Princeton started just one freshman, Nicole Loncar.
A Head Start: As with each of Princeton's previous four opponents, Richmond started its season the same day Princeton held its first practice, Aug. 22.
On the Spiders: Richmond is looking to bounce back after a winless week at William & Mary and against Tennessee at Virginia that dropped the Spiders to 3-4 on the season. Six players have contributed to Richmond's 11 goals this season, with redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan putting in a team-best four. Junior Emily Kelly has played all but 90 of the team's 634 minutes in goal and has a 2.31 GAA.
4 for 4?: Lauren Lazo would become the first Tiger since Diana Matheson '08 to earn All-Ivy honors in all four years if she is so recognized this season. She and sophomore Tyler Lussi, an honorable mention All-Ivy last year, are the only returning Tigers with all-league honors. Lazo was an honorable mention as a freshman, first-team all-league as a sophomore and second-team all-league as a junior.
PKs: Penalty kicks have been relatively rare for the Tigers, but when they happen, lately a senior has had the honor of taking the kick. Last Friday night at La Salle, Lazo became the fourth straight senior to score a penalty kick goal for Princeton. The last non-senior to score a PK was Diana Matheson '08 in 2006.
A Strong Debut: Tyler Lussi's 10 goals last season were the most for a Princeton freshman since 1982, when Linda DeBoer '86 had 12. Jen Hoy '13, who led Princeton in goals in all four of her seasons, was the last Tiger freshman to pace the team in goals scored, doing so in 2009.
Between the Posts: Senior Darcy Hargadon, the most experienced goalkeeper the Tigers had entering the 2014 season, has played every one of the team's first 400 minutes and authored her sixth career shutout earlier this season against Seton Hall. A year ago, she accounted for five shutouts and 12 of the team's 17 starts in goal, playing 1,141 of the team's 1,620 minutes. The remaining three keepers on the roster, senior MicKenzie Roberts-Lahti, sophomore Hannah Winner and freshman Gudrun Valdis Jonsdottir, have played in four games between them for a total of just under 200 minutes.
Up Next: Princeton will complete the two-game trip to Virginia with a match at William & Mary, alma mater of head coach Julie Shackford, at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Tribe are 4-1-1 heading into a Thursday night contest against Davidson and are unbeaten in four straight games.
