Welcome Home: Princeton is on its last regular-season visit to head coach Julie Shackford's home state of Virginia. This is Princeton's 12th trip to the state, the last nine of which have come under Shackford. The Tigers last visited Virginia for a 2011 game at William & Mary. Shackford is an alumna of William & Mary and a native of Northern Virginia.
The Series: Five of the seven all-time meetings between Princeton and William & Mary have come with Tribe alumna Julie Shackford as the head coach, but not the first home-and-home in 1991 and 1992. William & Mary won both of those, with Princeton's only win in the series coming in Princeton in 2001. The Tribe won the next three, all on their home field in 2002, 2006 and 2011, and the teams tied in Princeton last season.
Last Meeting: The series renewal between Princeton and William & Mary will come nearly a year to the day after the last game, on Sept. 22, 2013 in Princeton. William & Mary scored early, in the eighth minute, and Princeton scored late, in the 82nd, and things ended in a 1-1 tie. Both goal scorers - Nicole Baxter for W&M and Gabrielle Ragazzo for Princeton - are back with the teams this season, as are both goalkeepers, with Caroline Casey for the Tribe and Darcy Hargadon for the Tigers. Princeton outshot William & Mary 24-7 overall in that contest.
Weekly Honors: Lauren Lazo was both the Ivy League and ECAC Player of the Week last week for her three-goal, one-assist performance, having a hand (or, more accurately, foot) in all four of the team's goals on the week. She scored first against La Salle on a penalty kick and assisted on soon-to-be Ivy League Rookie of the Week Beth Stella's goal to re-tie the game at 2-2. Against Villanova, she scored both goals in a 2-1 win, including the last one with 64 seconds left. The Ivy honor is the fourth Player of the Week award of Lazo's career, pulling her even with former teammate Jen Hoy '13 and one behind current assistant coach Esmeralda Negron '05 for the all-time Princeton record for Ivy Player of the Week honors.
One More Time: Princeton head coach Julie Shackford announced that the 2014 season, her 20th leading the team, will be her final one. With the win over Villanova, Shackford is now three wins away from her 200th victory with Princeton, already having outpaced any other soccer coach in Princeton men's or women's program history. Shackford has led the team to six Ivy League championships and an Ivy-record eight NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by the team's run to the 2004 NCAA College Cup semifinals.
The Coaches: Princeton coach Julie Shackford and William & Mary coach John Daly need no introduction, as Daly coached Shackford in her final two seasons at William & Mary, first as an assistant coach in 1986 and the head coach in 1987. Daly has remained in that post ever since, now in his 28th season. Shackford is entering her 20th at Princeton.
Rookies: With keeper Gudrun Jonsdottir making her debut late in the Richmond game, all seven Princeton freshmen have now played in a game this season. Six of those, including every field player, have already started games this season, including three (Natalie Larkin, Alessia Azermadhi, Katie Pratt-Thompson) who have started all five games. In the 2013 opener, Princeton started just one freshman, Nicole Loncar.
A Head Start: As with each of Princeton's previous five opponents, William & Mary started its season two weekends before Princeton had its first game. The Tigers' first practice was on Aug. 22, two days before the Tribe's first regular-season game on Aug. 24.
On the Tribe: William & Mary is on a four-match winning streak and a five-match unbeaten streak as it prepares to host Princeton Sunday afternoon. The Tribe is on a shutout streak of 205:48, including back-to-back road shutouts against Penn and Davidson. Eight players have scored a goal for W&M, none more than three goals, and Caroline Casey has played every minute in goal while accruing a 1.24 GAA. While Sunday's game will serve as W&M's last pre-conference game as well, the Tribe have faced two more teams beyond Richmond that also appear on Princeton's schedule. North Carolina State and Penn, the last two games of Princeton's regular season, have each come up short against the Tribe, 3-0 against Penn and 2-1 against the Wolfpack.
4 for 4?: Lauren Lazo would become the first Tiger since Diana Matheson '08 to earn All-Ivy honors in all four years if she is so recognized this season. She and sophomore Tyler Lussi, an honorable mention All-Ivy last year, are the only returning Tigers with all-league honors. Lazo was an honorable mention as a freshman, first-team all-league as a sophomore and second-team all-league as a junior.
Encore?: Friday night in the final minute against Richmond, Tyler Lussi scored her first goal of the season and 11th of her career. Her 10 goals last season were the most for a Princeton freshman since 1982, when Linda DeBoer '86 had 12. Jen Hoy '13, who led Princeton in goals in all four of her seasons, was the last Tiger freshman to pace the team in goals scored, doing so in 2009.
Between the Posts: Senior Darcy Hargadon, the most experienced goalkeeper the Tigers had entering the 2014 season, has played all but 18 of the team's first 490 minutes and authored her sixth career shutout earlier this season against Seton Hall. A year ago, she accounted for five shutouts and 12 of the team's 17 starts in goal, playing 1,141 of the team's 1,620 minutes. The remaining three keepers on the roster, senior MicKenzie Roberts-Lahti, sophomore Hannah Winner and freshman Gudrun Valdis Jonsdottir, have played in four games between them for a total 218 minutes, with Jonsdottir making her debut this season as the only other keeper to play for Princeton in 2014.
Up Next: The Ivy season will beckon next Saturday in New Haven when Princeton heads to Yale for a 4 p.m. contest. The Bulldogs stand at 5-1 heading into their final pre-Ivy contest Sunday against New Hampshire.
