Box Score | Video of Tyler Lussi's Goal
| Both Princeton and Yale know how important every Ivy League game is with just seven available to earn points, and the play on the field made that apparent. It wasn't until Tyler Lussi's goal with less than six minutes to go that Princeton was able to break through and hold off Yale 1-0 to win the opening game of the Ivy slate. Princeton and Yale had gone to overtime in each of the last two meetings, and Saturday's game appeared headed there as well. On the play that culminated in Lussi's goal, a Yale head met a Princeton throw-in, and Princeton freshman Vanessa Gregoire took control of the ball when it came back down to the turf. Gregoire, standing just outside the 18-yard box, passed ahead to Lussi near the penalty spot and Lussi wheeled around to fire a shot inside the left post. With the first weekend of Ivy League games unfolding, Princeton joined Columbia and Harvard as first-game winners with Brown and Dartmouth still to play Sunday afternoon. The win also marked the 198th victory of Princeton head coach Julie Shackford's career at Princeton, which she announced will be coming to an end after her 20th season this fall. |

84:03: Princeton's Tyler Lussi scored on an assist from Vanessa Gregoire. |
| • Saturday's game continued the trend of Princeton-Yale games being close contests. It was the 10th straight game between the teams that was decided by two goals or fewer and third straight decided by one goal. The last two games went to overtime, with Yale winning last year and Princeton two years ago. • Home field continues to hold some sort of curse in this series, with the home team losing each of the last eight games. Yale hasn't beaten Princeton at Reese Stadium since 2006, and Princeton hasn't beat Yale in Princeton since 2003. • Princeton's third goalkeeper of the year saw action Saturday when sophomore Hannah Winner shut out Yale for the game's final 82-plus minutes after Darcy Hargadon left the game in the eighth minute. • Princeton continued using a young lineup Saturday, with four freshman starters: Natalie Larkin, Alessia Azermadhi, Vanessa Gregoire and Beth Stella. Mikaela Symanovich entered as a sub to make it five freshmen who played. • The appearance was the fourth for sophomore Hannah Winner in her career and it was her second combined shutout. Winner played the last 33-plus minutes in a 4-0 win over Cornell last season. • Tyler Lussi's goal was her second of the season, both in the last three games. It was Princeton's eighth goal of the season as a team and the first one on which senior co-captain Lauren Lazo did not score or have an assist. • With her assist on the goal, Vanessa Gregoire became the sixth Tiger to score a point this season and the third freshman. Classmate Alessia Azermadhi had an assist last weekend at William & Mary, and Beth Stella had a goal and an assist against La Salle and Villanova respectively two weekends ago. |
