Last Meeting: Princeton and Seton Hall played to a 0-0 tie last Sept. 13, the first tie in the 11-match history of the series, which began in 1994. Princeton's last win against Seton Hall came in the Pirates' last visit to Roberts Stadium in 2010, with Seton Hall winning in South Orange in 2011 and tying last year. Princeton goalkeeper Darcy Hargadon, who authored that 110-minute shutout last year, is back for her final season, while Seton Hall graduated last year's keeper, Jennifer Pettigrew.
One More Time: Princeton head coach Julie Shackford announced that the 2014 season, her 20th leading the team, will be her final one. Shackford is four wins away from her 200th victory with Princeton, already having outpaced any other soccer coach in Princeton men's or women's program history. Shackford has led the team to six Ivy League championships and an Ivy-record eight NCAA tournament appearances, highlighted by the team's run to the 2004 NCAA College Cup semifinals.
The Coaches: For the second straight match, Princeton head coach Julie Shackford, in her 20th season at Princeton, will face a coach who is in his first season as head coach at his current school. Rick Stainton, who was previously an assistant coach at Seton Hall before taking over as the head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson for the 2013 season.
For Openers: Princeton opened its season Friday night against a Rutgers team that entered with a 3-0 record and was receiving the eighth-most votes among teams not included in the NSCAA national poll. The Scarlet Knights had a 1-0 lead at halftime after a seventh-minute goal before opening things up in the second half on the way to a 5-0 win.
Rookies: Princeton started four freshmen in its season opener against Rutgers Friday night, including Vanessa Gregoire, Natalie Larkin, Alessia Azermadhi and Katie Pratt-Thompson. In the 2013 opener, Princeton started just one freshman, Nicole Loncar.
A Head Start: As Princeton and its fellow Ivy programs do annually, the Tigers will face another early-season opponent with a couple weeks of games already played. Seton Hall started the season Aug. 22, the same day Princeton had its first official practice, with a 2-0 win over Marist before suffering defeats against Rider, Rutgers, Monmouth and Stony Brook. All four of the losses came by one goal each, either 1-0 or 2-1.
On the Pirates: Though Seton Hall may stand at 1-4 entering Monday's contest, the Pirates have a goals-against average of just 1.00 after giving up a total of five goals in five games. Seton Hall's opponents have been just a little bit better at keeping the Pirates off the board, holding the team scoreless in defeats against Rider, Rutgers and Monmouth before scoring in the 67th minute against Stony Brook to pull within 2-1 in that contest. Nine players scored a goal for Seton Hall last season, but only Kaitlyn Ritter (seven) scored more than three. Ritter wrapped her career last season, and junior D'Yonna Riley and sophomore Sarah Cortes have each scored once to account for Seton Hall's goals this season. In goal, junior Gina Maiorana and sophomore Illissa Blackshear have split the team's 450 minutes this season, Maiorana giving up two goals and Blackshear three. Of the two, only Maiorana saw time for the Pirates prior to this season, playing 40 of the team's 1,674 minutes a year ago.
Happy Returns: Princeton brings back 24 of its 27 goals from last season, including the team's top four scorers from 2013: Tyler Lussi (10), Lauren Lazo (five), Melissa Downey (three) and Jessica Haley (three).
Encore: Though she and the Tigers were held scoreless Friday night, Tyler Lussi's 10 goals last season were the most for a Princeton freshman since 1982, when Linda DeBoer '86 had 12. Jen Hoy '13, who led Princeton in goals in all four of her seasons, was the last Tiger freshman to pace the team in goals scored, doing so in 2009.
Between the Posts: Senior Darcy Hargadon, the most experienced goalkeeper the Tigers had entering the 2014 season, got the start and played the full 90 against Rutgers Friday night. A year ago, she accounted for 12 of the team's 17 starts in goal and played 1,141 of the team's 1,620 minutes. The remaining three keepers on the roster, senior MicKenzie Roberts-Lahti, sophomore Hannah Winner and freshman Gudrun Valdis Jonsdottir, have played in four games between them for a total of just under 200 minutes.
