TROY, N.Y. (1/2/14) - Sophomore Hilary Lloyd scored twice as Princeton played catch up but the Tigers couldn't get ahead, falling 4-3 at Rensselaer on Friday, Jan. 3 in the first game of 2015.
The Engineers took an early 2-0 lead before Lloyd's two goals evened the game at 2-2. Rensselaer regained the lead before the first intermission. The teams traded goals in the second period and despite a 12-3 Princeton shot advantage in the third frame, the Tigers couldn't take the lead.
It marked just the second win for RPI on its home ice against the Tigers in the all-time series. Princeton took a 2-1 overtime game at Hobey Baker Rink earlier this season.
RPI scored on its first shot on goal of the game, just 24 seconds in. Amanda Kimmerle took a shot from the left point that was redirected by Ali Svoboda between the left pipe and netminder Kimberly Newell.
A defensive breakdown led to the second goal at 2:33. Katie Rooney skated in on transition and had two defenders skating back but there was some miscommunication and Rooney skipped between them and caught Newell off guard.
Just 15 seconds into Princeton's first power play the Tigers cut their deficit to one. Sophomore Cassidy Tucker, who was playing in her first game since Oct. 27, got her first point after missing 13 games. Tucker had the puck on the extended red and slotted it to junior Jaimie McDonell. McDonell pushed it forward closer to the paint and Lloyd was able to get her stick on it and push it over the line.
McDonell was crucial to setting up Princeton's second goal at 11:31 of the first period. She prevented the Engineers from getting the puck out of their zone and stole it away on the outlet pass. She sent a cross-ice pass to Lloyd who had a one-timer on the back door and her first career two-goal game.
Katie Rooney regained the lead for the Engineers, 3-2, four mintues later. Newell couldn't contain a Mariana Walsh rebound and Rooney captialized on the loose puck.
Sophomore Molly Contini tied the game at 3-3 at 8:09 of the second period when she redirected an Ali Pankowski shot from the left point. Molly Strabley was credited with the secondary assist as she crossed the puck to Pankowski.
Maris Raspa scored the eventual game-winning goal at 12:28 of the second when she flipped in a great feed from Alexa Gruschow.
RPI thought it had taken its second two-goal lead midway through the third period while Morgan Sly was in the box on a tripping call. After official review it was determined that one of the officials at whistled a stoppage before the goal was scored and it was waved off.
With 1:50 remaining in the game, Princeton put an extra skater on the ice to try to knot things up. The Tigers finished off the time trying to keep the puck in the zone and hold possession and weren't able to get a shot on goal.
Newell made 17 saves in net for Princeton, while Kelly O'Brien stopped 30 shots for RPI.
Princeton was 1 for 2 on the power play and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.
Princeton faces Union tomorrow, Jan. 3 at 3 p.m., at Messa Rink. Union dropped a 4-0 game to No. 5 Quinnipiac earlier this afternoon.
