Princeton's NCAA tournament run came to an end Friday night at Virginia with a 3-0 loss to No. 11 USC in the Round of 32. USC scored three times in the first half and never let the Tigers back in despite the Trojans outshooting Princeton just 12-11. USC's Sydney Slatek knocked in a loose ball in the 12th minute for the game's first goal, and Morgan Andrews had the first of her two goals in the 23rd minute when she fired one across the box and just inside the left post. Andrews made it 3-0 with 1:57 before the break, banking one off a Princeton defender and in. USC sealed the door on any comeback try for the Tigers in the second half even though Princeton had a 3-2 edge in shots after the break. Princeton's Hannah Winner made five saves in defeat to four for USC's Sammy Jo Prudhomme. |
| Game Notes |
|
• Princeton was in the Round of 32 for the second time in four years. The Tigers were aiming to become the first Princeton team to make the Round of 16 since 2004 and the first Ivy team since Yale in 2005 to do so. • This was the first meeting between Princeton and USC in women's soccer. • Princeton trailed for the first time since the Army West Point game on Oct. 7 and lost for the first time since the Delaware game on Sept. 10, breaking a 13-game unbeaten streak. • Friday's loss was just the third time all season that Princeton was shut out (Sept. 3 vs. Rutgers, Sept. 10 vs. Delaware). • Only one of Princeton's 11 starters (defender Emily Sura) was a senior.
• This was Princeton's third NCAA game at Virginia. Villanova won 2-1 in 2003's first round and West Virginia won 2-1 in 2008's first round. • Princeton's 14 wins tied for the second-most in program history with the 1980, 2001 and 2012 teams. • This season was just the second time in Ivy history that a league team won an NCAA tournament game with the team's coach in his or her first year leading the program as the Tigers have in Sean Driscoll (Dartmouth, Erica Walsh, 2000). |
