Captain Alex Lunt Reflects On Squash Impact Prior To Senior Day Friday
February 04, 2015 | Women's Squash
LIVE STREAMING l @TIGERSQUASH1 l @PUTIGERS
Senior Alex Lunt has been part of both championship wins and heartbreaking losses, but she has also logged hundreds of more hours with her teammates in practice, on the bus, or simply around the Princeton campus.
As she prepares for her final team match at Jadwin Friday, Lunt reflects on how Princeton Squash has impacted her, and how she hopes Princeton Squash can impact the Howe Cup. You can watch the full video in the image above, or by going here.
We'll get to the Howe Cup next week, because fifth-ranked Princeton (8-2, 3-2 Ivy) has two more matches this weekend before it can turn its full focus to the national team championships. The Tigers will honor their Class of 2015 (Nicole Bunyan, Hadley Chu, Hallie Dewey and Alex Lunt) prior to the Friday afternoon matchup against Columbia; the match is scheduled to begin at 4 pm, though it will follow the men's match against Columbia that begins at 2 pm.
While the seniors may be the focus of Friday, it has been the play of some Princeton underclassmen that has been extremely impressive recently. Reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year Maria Elena Ubina took out a 2014 CSA semifinalist last week and is Princeton's only undefeated starter this season. Freshman Olivia Fiechter has taken over the No. 1 spot and went 4-0 last week, while classmate Kira Keating had a key win at Yale to earn the CSA Player of the Week honor.
Princeton, building off its 5-4 road win at fourth-ranked Yale last Sunday, will get the maximum effort from Columbia Friday. The Lions are currently ranked ninth, and likely need a win over either Princeton or Penn this weekend to have a chance at the 'A' flight for the Howe Cup Championships.
The match will be played over two shifts, and all five courts will be streamed via the Ivy League Digital Network.
The Tigers will conclude the regular season Sunday at 1 pm in Ithaca against sixth-ranked Cornell. The Big Red doesn't lack for motivation, either; Cornell needs a win over either Penn or Princeton this weekend to post its first four-win performance in Ivy League play since the program gained varsity status in 1996.
