PRINCETON, N.J. – Leading from end-to-end, the No. 18 Princeton University women's basketball team cruised to an 83-44 victory over Columbia University at Jadwin Gymnasium.
Playing its first home game since Jan. 10, the Tigers extended their Ivy League record start to 20-0 (4-0 Ivy). With a victory over Cornell tomorrow, Princeton would match the longest win streak in program history, set during the 2009-10 season.
Michelle Miller led all scorers with 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting. Alex Wheatley had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Mariah Smith hit all four of her shot attempts en route to nine points. Blake Dietrick and Taylor Williams chipped in with eight points apiece, while combining for six rebounds and four assists.
Jumping out to a fast start, the Tigers netted the game's first five points on a Miller pull-up and a Dietrick triple from the top of the key. After Carolyn Gallagher netted Columbia's first points with a basket at 17:47, Miller hit a jumper from the right elbow.
After an Amanda Berntsen layup on the fastbreak padded the cushion, Dietrick knifed into the paint before dishing it to Miller for two. Making a nice backdoor cut, Berntsen converted another easy bucket to give Princeton its first double-digit lead at 13-2.
Still up by 11 midway through the first half, Wheatley connected on consecutive layups to stretch the margin to 15. M. Smith would make it 25-8 with a layup at the 5:20 mark before two-straight baskets by Camille Zimmerman and Alexa Giuliano trimmed the Lions' deficit to 13.
Coming right back, Princeton closed out final 4:13 of the half on a 14-7 run. Williams got the stretch with a layup off a M. Smith feed before Vanessa Smith got out in transition for an easy two. Ahead by 17 inside the final minute of the period, Annie Tarakchian knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner to stake the Tigers to a 39-19 edge at the intermission.
Outscoring Columbia 26-10 in the paint and 9-0 on second chance points, Princeton shot 56.7 percent (17-30) from the floor. Helping to force 11 Lion miscues, the Orange and Black held a 13-4 advantage in points off turnovers over the first 20 minutes of action.
Dietrick opened up the second half scoring with a lefty layup in transition before Williams spun off her defender and converted down low to put Princeton up 24.
With the lead swelling to 29 by the 13-minute mark, Tori Oliver hit a layup to make it 58-34. The Princeton defense responded by holding the visitors without a field goal for the next 12:01, with Zimmerman snapping the Lions' scoring drought with a bucket with just 19 seconds remaining.
Shooting 55.2 percent from the floor, the Tigers knocked down 41.7 percent of their three-pointers. Holding a 32-19 rebounding edge, the Orange and Black finished with a 50-16 margin in points in the paint and a 19-0 edge in second chance points. Scoring 35 points off of 25 Columbia turnovers, the Tigers held a 17-4 advantage in fastbreak points.
