Coach Hughes Recaps Productive Tampa Training Trip For Tiger Heavyweights
February 09, 2015 | Heavyweight Rowing
Following the team's annual training trip to Tampa, Fla., after exams, Princeton heavyweight head coach Greg Hughes took some time to recap the trip to his alumni. He shared his thoughts here with GoPrincetonTigers.com
The Heavies had a great week of training down in Tampa over the last week of January. The weather was pretty incredible with temps in the 60's and 70's and some great water. We were lucky enough to log some good, long miles out on the Tampa Bay and upstream on the Hillsborough River which was a welcome change after nearly two months of training indoors. Once again, the teams trained out of the Stewards Foundation boathouse right in downtown Tampa and within walking distance of the team hotel and the UT dining hall where we ate our meals. We've posted some pics from the training up on our Princeton Rowing Facebook page and you can find them HERE.
During the trip, we were also able to make great use of our new biomech equipment, which was very generously donated to the program last year. As you may have read in a recent addition of the Rowing Notes, we are now using two systems that allow us to measure a number of different things on each individual rower's stroke and on the entire boat as a whole. Some of the things that we can now measure are the length, connection and power of every athlete's stroke and the way that an entire line up is accelerating and decelerating the hull. Obviously, this equipment is no substitute for hard work and motivated, talented athletes, but the information we learned during our training allowed us to focus directly on some important things that had a positive impact on our rowing over the course of the trip.
In addition to the hard work that was done down there, the Heavies also took part in some of their time-honored Tampa traditions. Most notable was this year's T. Wickham Schmidt '99 Mustache Competition. This year's winner was team captain Jamie Hamp '15 who was sporting Yosemite Sam inspired 'stache. We've posted a compilation of photos of the contestants and you can find it HERE.
We were also very fortunate to have video man Doug Myers on the trip with us this year. Doug spent the week capturing tons of footage and we hope to have a great video recap of the week out to all of you in the next week or so. Stay tuned!
On Saturday, we returned to Princeton and a very frozen Carnegie Lake. In fact, the white flag, which signifies that the lake is open for skating, is currently flying from the flagpole at the boathouse. Winter training is in full effect for the foreseeable future. We will be working hard indoors for the next few weeks in preparation for the CRASH P boathouse-wide erg race on February 28 and for our first regular season race on March 28.
I will be back in touch again soon with more updates as the CRASH P approaches and Doug has his video ready to share.
Thanks so much for your support and Go Tigers!
