PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University baseball team opened its home and Ivy League schedule by splitting a pair of games against Brown University.
Falling 4-3 to the Bears in the first game of the twinbill, the Tigers rebounded in the nightcap, securing an 8-2 decision. Princeton returns to action on Monday, Mar. 30 for another Ivy doubleheader against Yale.
GAME 1: BROWN 4, PRINCETON 3
Looking to push across the game's first run, Danny Baer and Paul Tupper drew a pair of walks to start the bottom of the second. Advancing on a Tyler Servais sacrifice bunt, Baer came home on a Blake Thomsen groundout to third.
Hoping to extend the Tiger lead, Billy Arendt singled up the middle to lead off the Princeton third. Later on second with two outs, Arendt came home on a clutch Peter Owens RBI double down the leftfield line.
Mounting a comeback in the top of the seventh, Brown put the first two runners on with a Princeton error and walk. Squaring around to bunt, Sam Grigo pushed a ball back toward the mound. Despite fielding it cleanly, Chad Powers sent the throw to first over Zack Belski's head and into the rightfield corner, allowing both runners to come home. Going all the way to third on the play, Grigo scored on a Tim McKeithan double to left. Moving to third on a fly ball to right, McKeithan later scored on a Marc Sredojevic sacrifice to center to make it 4-2.
With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Hoy breathed life into the Princeton offense with a solo homer to center. Belski followed with a single to right, spelling the end of starter Eddie Fitzpatrick's day. With Cody Phillips pinch running for Belski, Brown turned to reliever Dave St. Lawrence, who got Owens to fly out to center to end the Tiger rally.
Hoy finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored, while Owens was 2-for-4. Asher Lee-Tyson, Arendt and Belski accounted for the rest of the Tigers' seven hits.
Despite a strong start, Powers took the loss, giving up four runs (none earned) on three hits with four strikeouts. Fitzpatrick gave up three runs on seven hits in the win, while St. Lawrence recorded his third save of the season.
GAME 2: PRINCETON 8, BROWN 2
Jumping out to an early lead, Princeton plated a pair of runs in the first. Leading off the inning, Billy Arendt doubled down the leftfield line. Moving to third on a passed ball, Arendt would come home on a Peter Owens groundout to third. With a runner on second and two outs, Danny Baer tripled to center to plate the Tigers' second run.
Extending its lead the following inning, Princeton pushed across three runs on three hits. With runners on first and second and one out, Arendt found a hole on the right side of the infield to load the bases. Danny Hoy promptly doubled down the leftfield line to make it 4-0. With the bases once again loaded after Zack Belski drew a walk, Owens hit a grounder to second, allowing Arendt to come home.
With Princeton unable to add to its lead in the bottom of the fourth despite loading the bases, the Bears got one back in the fifth on a Joshua Huntley solo shot to left. In the bottom of the inning, Tyler Servais led things off with a homer of his own to up the margin to 6-1.
Trimming the Princeton deficit, Brown plated another run in the top of the sixth on a Jake Levine RBI single down the rightfield line. With the Bears later loading the bases with one out, Nick Brady pitched out of a jam, getting Cam Wilkie to ground into a double play to end the threat and limit the damage.
Princeton capped off the scoring in the bottom of the eighth, plating two runs on a Brown error and Belski grounder to second. Arendt finished 2-for-4 with three runs scored, while Servais was 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Nick Brady threw six strong innings in the win, giving up just two runs on five hits while striking out four. Nick Donatiello pitched three hitless innings in relief with three strikeouts.
