Lightweight Women Push Top Duo, Finish Third In San Diego Crew Classic
March 29, 2015 | Women's Rowing - Lightweight
Princeton rowed from the third lane due to its preseason seed, and it was never able to top either No. 3 Stanford or No. 2 Boston University in either the preliminary or the final. Sunday's championship race went to Stanford in 7:05.44, which was less than four seconds faster than Boston University (7:09.20).
Princeton pushed hard to break into that top duo, but it finished third in 7:12.55. That time was more than nine seconds faster than fourth-place Villanova and 28 better than fifth-place MIT.
“The race was very tight for the majority just as it was yesterday,” head coach Paul Rassam said. “Both BU and Stanford were able to find higher cadences and faster gears the last 500 meters. Much of our losing margin came in these final meters. So we will have to shore that up over the coming weeks.
“Overall we showed this weekend that we can compete with these teams that have been ranked higher than us in the preseason,” Rassam said. “But we are far from content with these results.”
Princeton trailed both Stanford and Boston University during Saturday's race for lanes, though the Tigers showed how close they were to those two programs. Only 2.7 seconds separated the three crews during that race.
Princeton will get two good weeks of training coming up before making the short trip to Lake Mercer to compete for the Knecht Cup. Last year, Princeton topped a strong field, which included both Boston University and Wisconsin, in a thrilling Knecht Cup final.
