Ratcliffe & Curham Win to Put Princeton in Lead on Day 1 of Heps

PHILADELPHIA (5/9/15) – The Princeton women's track & field team in is first place after Day 1 of the 2015 Ivy League Heptagonal outdoor track & field championship, with a 13-point lead over Harvard, 39-26.
Junior Julia Ratcliffe started the day out as she has the past two years – with a win. The NCAA hammer throw champion set a Heps record for the second straight season, throwing to 68.16 (223-7). Her best throw came on her second attempt, while all five of her countable throws reach 64 meters. Ratcliffe threw 67.75 last year for her second Heps hammer title. Classmate Brielle Rowe added a point to the team total, as she placed sixth with a throw of 50.28 (164-11) on her final attempt.
Two Tigers earned second-place finishes in the field events to add 16 more points to the team's Day 1 total.
Junior Sara Ronde was the runner-up in the long jump at 5.66 (18-6). She reached the mark on her fourth attempt, but wouldn't be able to get any further as she fouled on her final two attempts. Ronde was third in the long jump at indoor Heps.
Sophomore Allison Harris claimed second place in the pole vault. She cleared 3.75 (12-3.50) on her first attempt but couldn't reach the next height of 3.80 (12-5.5). Harris has scored in the event all four times she has entered, with this being the second-time she has earned second place. Harris also qualified for the final of the 100 hurdles tomorrow afternoon. She posted the fourth-best time in the prelims, at 14.35.
Another point in the field events came from senior Sarah Waszketwitz. She took sixth in the javelin at 41.14 (135), throwing her best toss on her final throw.
Sophomore Megan Curham won the only scored track event of the day, the final event, the 10k. She ran 34:08.99 for her first 10k win, after taking second a year ago. Senior Kathryn Fluehr added a point with a sixth-place finish of 35:18.94. Curham took the lead from the gun, as she did indoors in the 5k. She began to lap the field at the 5k mark and wouldn't be touched, crossing the line with no one in sight. Fluehr was in the hunt for top three until the final five laps when she dropped back. Freshman Natalie Rathjen was in the pack of top eight before dropping out of the race all together, and senior Lindsay Eysenbach was ninth at 36:20.59.
Four more Tigers qualified for tomorrow's finals.
Senior Jasmine Blocker and sophomore Elisa Steele will both race in the 400. Blocker ran 54.08 to take second in heat 2, while Steele posted 56.32 to take the final qualifying spot.
In the 800, it will be junior Cecilia Barowski and senior Kim Mackay vying for the title. Barowski posted a 2:08.94 to win heat 3, while Mackay ran 2:09.16 to take second in heat 1.
Junior Taylor Morgan is in third place a little more than midway through the heptathlon with 3,160. Kerry Krause is currently in sixth place with 2,919 points. Three events remain.
Day 2 gets underway at 10 a.m., with the continuation of the hepathlon.
