Miller Helps Princeton Past Brown As Tigers Return From Exams In Style
January 30, 2016 | Women's Basketball
Box Score
It took the Princeton women's basketball team until the end of the national anthem to shake off the rust of a 20-day layoff for first semester exams.
Actually, the rust might have been gone by the time the Princeton band reached "the rockets red glare."
Princeton, playing for the first time since Jan. 9, scored the first 13 points of the game, led by 20 at the half and rolled past Brown 72-53 in front 1,819 fans at Jadwin Gym Friday night. The win improved Princeton to 12-4 overall and 1-1 in the Ivy League.
"We've been playing against each other for so long," said Princeton's Michelle Miller. "It was great to finally get out and play someone else."
Miller led Princeton with 21 points, nine of which came in the first 2:57, by which time it was 13-0 Tigers. Brown would get within six, briefly, but Princeton built it back to double figures and held at least a 10-point lead for the final 31:44. It was 39-19 Tigers at intermission.
GAME NOTES
* Miller's 21 points gave her 1,138 for her career. She is 25 away from 16th place all time at Princeton. Miller scored 18 of her 21 points in the first half.
* Annie Tarakchian matched her career high with 17 rebounds. It was her second-straight 17-rebound game and fourth of her career. "I just see the ball and try to get it," Tarakchian said. "I'm not really thinking about how many rebounds I have. When I hear I had 17, it doesn't seem like I had that many." For some historical context, Tarakchian has four 17-rebound games. Every other Princeton women's basketball player combined in the last 17 years also has four games with at least 17 rebounds and no Princeton men's player has had at least 17 in a game since Mason Rocca had 18 against Georgetown in the 1999 NIT.
* Princeton used 14 players in the game, and nine played at least 10 minutes.
* Alex Wheatley had six points in the game, leaving her 41 away from becoming the 24th 1,000-point scorer in program history.
* Gabrielle Rush, a freshman from Illinois, had her first career double figure game with 10 points - in 10 minutes, on 4 for 5 shooting.
* Princeton outrebounded Brown 55-39. The Tigers had 16 offensive boards.
* Princeton is home again Saturday night to take on Yale at 6 in the "Play 4 Kay" game. All fans wearing pink will be admitted for free.
