No. 9 Princeton Women's Hockey Win Streak Halted at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (1/30/16) - No. 9 Princeton's program-record 12-game win streak came to an end this afternoon in a 4-1 loss to Harvard this afternoon in a women's hockey tilt at the Bright-Landry Hockey Center.It also snapped a two-game win streak in the series for the Tigers, as the Crimson have won the last 11 meetings at Bright.
Harvard (12-8-1, 9-6-1 ECAC, 5-2 Ivy) took a 2-0 lead and outshot Princeton (17-5-1, 10-5-1 ECAC, 7-2 Ivy) 13-8 in the opening period. Princeton's sticks started to come alive as the Tigers outshot the Crimson 16-9 in the second as the teams traded goals. Princeton again outshot Harvard in the third and finished with a 35-29 shot advantage.
The Tigers were 0 for 3 on the power play and 2 for 2 on the penalty kill.
"I'm proud of the team," Princeton associate head coach Cara Morey said. "They fought all the way until the end, and there was just some bounces that didn't go our way."
Junior Fiona McKenna took a checking penalty at 3:52 and it was the special teams that broke open some scoring chances for both teams. Senior Jaimie McDonell had the first real scoring chance of the game on a short-handed attempt 1:10 into the penalty. Briana Mastel followed up with Harvard's first shot on goal of the game that was gloved by Kimberly Newell, and coincidental roughing penalties followed to set up a 20-second 5x4.
The Crimson worked the puck around the power play and just as McKenna was released from the box, Harvard scored. Michelle Picard had a shot saved by Newell before Lexie Laing poked the puck free and slide it to the right side for Karly Heffernan who had an open right side after the commotion on the left and went high glove.
Sydney Daniels expanded the lead at 9:37 with a redirection on a Miye D'Oench shot from far in to the left face-off circle.
Junior Morgan Sly cut made it a one-goal game at 1:18 of the second with help from junior Cassidy Tucker and freshman Karlie Lund. Lund took a draw in the right circle that was won by Tucker as she reached to collected the puck and loft it on net. Maschmeyer chested the puck down and Lund got the rebound and pushed it to over to the left side where Sly used an outstretched stick to put her team on the board.

Two minutes however, the Crimson lead was back to two with a D'Oench goal that banked in off the post. D'Oench intercepted a pass along the left boards and sent the puck out to Picard at the right point. Picard rifled a shot that went off a Princeton defender and to the stick of D'Oench who whipped the puck towards the goal where it hit off the post and into the back of the net.
Princeton pulled Kimberly Newell at 17:00 and had three shots on goal before Haley Mullins was called for a high check. The Tigers earned a 6-on-4 opportunity with 2:33 remaining and had three shots blocked by the Crimson.
Daniels tacked on an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining.
Newell finished her game with 25 saves, while Maschmeyer made 34 stops.
Princeton wraps up a seven-game road swing next weekend, Feb. 5 & 6, at Colgate & Cornell.
