Lund's Hat Trick, Newell's 37 Saves Lead Princeton To Huge Win At Colgate
February 06, 2016 | Women's Ice Hockey
In the quest to play at home, the Princeton women's hockey team got a huge win on the road.
Freshman Karlie Lund scored three times and senior goalie Kimberly Newell made 37 saves to lead ninth-ranked Princeton to a 4-2 win over No. 10 Colgate in a matchup of teams who had entered the weekend tied for third in the ECAC standings. The top four ECAC teams get home ice in the upcoming quarterfinals.
Lund snapped a 2-2 tie with 7:41 to go in the third period, and she sealed it with an empty net goal with 43 seconds left. Newell made it all stand up, making 13 saves without allowing a goal in the third period.
Keiko DeClerck had the other Princeton goal, meaning all four Princeton scores came from freshmen.
Princeton improved to 18-5-1 on the year and 11-5-1 in the ECAC. The 23 points for the Tigers put them alone in third, behind Quinnipiac (29) and Clarkson (24).
Next up for Princeton is a game Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m., against Cornell, who lost 4-1 to Quinnipiac Friday night. A win by Princeton would solidify its position near the top of the ECAC and would also clinch the Ivy League championship.
Colgate scored just 2:46 into the game to go up 1-0, but any thought that this would be an easy game in either direction ended quickly, as Lund tied it 2:11 later on an unassisted goal. It was 2-1 Princeton after DeClerck's goal, from Fiona McKenna and Kelsey Koelzer, with 10:26 left in the first.
Colgate scored the only goal of the second period, tying it with 2:54 remaining, but that would be it against Newell, who made 11 saves in the first and then 13 each in the second and third.
After both teams had their chances, Lund put Princeton ahead for good with her second goal, from Molly Strabley and Koelzer, on a power play. The Tigers then killed off a penalty for two many players on the ice as Newell made several stops.
Lund, a three-time ECAC Rookie of the Month, ranks second nationally in points per game by a rookie. She is the first Tiger to tally a hat trick since Denna Laing '14 on Jan. 11, 2014 vs. Rensselaer.
