Third-Ranked Women's Squash Bounces Back With 7-2 Win Over No. 4 Stanford
January 31, 2016 | Women's Squash
“I think today was a great win for us,” junior Gabriella Garr said. “We all seemed to come in focused and competitive. Stanford was a strong team, but we did a fantastic job maintaining a solid level of squash throughout the afternoon.”
Princeton won 7-2 over Stanford, a match that included a pair of five-game thrillers that went the Tigers' way. Sophomore Kira Keating completed a perfect weekend with a second-straight 3-2 win, while senior Isabella Bersani completed a 3-2 win at the No. 8 spot with an 11-5 victory.
“Stanford has made big strides in the past year, adding new players and improving old players,” Bersani said. “So we came into the match really making sure we did not underestimate them. The top of the ladder won convincingly. There were also some nail biters. I won my match in five games and it was a long grind. It's great for us to end the weekend on a hard-earned win.”
Princeton went 3-1 during the opening shift (even matches), and then took firm control of the final shift to clinch the team victory. Princeton won 12 of 13 individual games in its four wins during the final shift, which included 3-0 wins for Olivia Fiechter, Rachel Leizman, and Samantha Chai.
"This weekend was mentally and physically tough but I think we finished on a strong note today," said sophomore Olivia Fiechter, the reigning Ivy League Rookie of the Year. "The Stanford team is stronger than they have been in the past and have had some big wins this season, so we knew we needed to recuperate from yesterday's match and come out strong today. I played Madeline Gill, who just returned from a year off where she was training and playing pro, so I knew she was going to be in good shape and disciplined on court, but I just tried to pressure her in the back and hold when I had openings in the front and was really happy to pull it out in three games.
"I think everyone did a great job and think today was important for our confidence as we approach our Yale match next weekend."
Princeton will play its first Ivy League home matches next weekend when it takes on both Yale and Brown. All courts during both matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
“Today we came out strong after quite a tough loss yesterday,” said junior Maria Elena Ubina, the 2014 Ivy League Rookie of the Year. “We put up a good fight today considering some of our girls have been injured and we are hoping to keep this momentum going for the Yale match next weekend.”
