Columbia Takes Game in Extra Time, 2-1
October 15, 2016 | Men's Soccer
NEW YORK, N.Y. (10/15/16) - Columbia's Vana Markarian scored a header off a corner kick in the 95th minute to lift the Lions to a 2-1 win over Princeton in men's soccer on Saturday afternoon.
Â
The first few minutes of overtime were quite before a goal kick was pushed forward by Dylan Mott. Senior Mark Romanowski kicked the ball away as the last defense and the Lions got a corner kick. A header by Arthur Bosua was going wide but deflected off a Tiger and out for another corner kick. The ball was taken by Andrew Tinari and headed by Rhys Williams towards the goal and Markarian redirected it with a header of his own to give his team the win.
Â
Columbia (8-2-1 2-0-1 Ivy) took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute before Princeton (6-5-1, 0-2-1 Ivy) equalized in the 51st.
Â
Both goalkeepers were challenged with senior Josh Haberman making six saves for Princeton and Dylan Castanheira stopping five shots for Columbia.
Â
Haberman's first big claim came in the 13th minute when a corner kick was collected in the box and aimed through traffic where he gobbled up the ball.
Â
Nine minutes later it was Castanheira who came up big on a save on senior Greg Seifert. Seifert picked up a through ball, settled it and fired where it got tangled up in the legs of Castanheira before he grabbed it.
Â
Markarian was a factor in his team's first goal as well as he sent a cross to John Denis, switching from left to right. Denis shot low under the stretch of Haberman and into the left pocket for his first goal of the season.
Â
Sophomore Sean McSherry did work along the touchline maintaining possession with some football before kicking the ball into the box for Seifert. Surrounded by two defenders, Seifert got Castanheira to drop and then froze his defenders as he shot between them for his seventh goal of the season.
Â
Seifert nearly had another goal in the 66th when Castanheira had to make a leaping save on a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that then bounced off the right post. He had another chance with two minutes left in regulation as the keeper bobbled a ball that both went up for.
Â
Haberman was kept busy on the other end of the field. He made his best stop of the second in the 56th minute when the Lions had a tic-tac-toe play with Danny Laranetto getting the final touch on a redirect that was swallowed by Haberman. He grabbed a header off a free kick in the 76th minute to force overtime.
Â
Princeton looks to rebound on Tuesday, Oct. 18 when it takes on Georgetown in the nation's capital.
