Columbia Scores Twice Late to Top Princeton
October 15, 2016 | Women's Soccer
The shot total was in Princeton's favor Saturday night at Columbia, but both goals went to the Lions in a pivotal Ivy League match in Manhattan.
With the 2-0 win, the Lions improve to 4-0 in the Ivy and lead second-place Harvard by four points heading into the league's fifth weekend next Saturday. The Tigers, who would have received a needed boost from a win Saturday night, instead fell eight points off the pace at 1-2-1 in the Ivy despite carrying a 9-3-1 record overall.
Princeton outshot the Lions 16-9 overall and 4-3 on goal, and the game stood scoreless until less than 17 minutes remained in regulation. After Columbia sent a ball forward from its defensive half, the Lions' Rachel Alexander caught up with it ahead of the Princeton defense, and with Tiger keeper Natalie Grossi out of the goal to try and corral the loose ball, Alexander got to it first and sent it in to put Columbia up 1-0.
Two minutes later, Columbia's Madeline Linde headed in a free kick for the 2-0 lead, and the Lions finished off the shutout.
Princeton will be back in action next Saturday with a 1 p.m. start against Harvard at Roberts Stadium.
