Tigers Tie Bucknell in Non-Conference Finale
October 25, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Mimi Asom's 71st-minute goal helped the Princeton women's soccer team tie Bucknell Tuesday night at Roberts Stadium in the team's non-conference finale.
The Tigers will head back into Ivy League play Saturday afternoon at Cornell with a 9-4-2 overall record with just the Nov. 5 visit from Penn beyond that to finish out its postseason resume.Â
Bucknell, which took on just its second non-win of the season, pulled ahead in the 25th minute when Maddie Mulford sent a ball forward to the team's leading scorer on the season, Kendall Ham, and Ham got past her Tiger defender and found herself one-on-one with Princeton keeper Natalie Grossi, sending in her 14th goal of the season.
Despite Princeton outshooting Bucknell 18-7 overall and 7-3 on goal on the night, the one-goal deficit persisted until Asom put on some moves in the corner of the 18-yard box and fired it just inside the right post past Bison keeper Jessica Ratner to square the match. Princeton put the pressure on as regulation wound down and kept it going into the overtimes, but Bucknell hung on for the tie.
Bucknell is among the six of Princeton's final eight opponents of the season which rank in the nation's top 25 in goals-against average, as the Bison posted eight shutouts on the season and had given up multiple goals only once on the fall, last time out against Lehigh in a 3-2 defeat, Bucknell's first of the season.
Princeton ended a scoring drought of just shy of 297 minutes with the Asom goal, and despite Princeton outshooting all six opponents so far during October, the Tigers went just 2-3-1 over the stretch.Â
With a three-game skid in the past, the Tigers will look to get back on the winning side in Saturday's 2:30 p.m. start at Cornell, a series that has seen Princeton take the last 20 meetings in a streak that dates back to 1996.
