Alex Day and Luke Gamble started their journey in the main doubles draw at the ITA All-America tournament in Tulsa against the nation's top-ranked pair in the round of 32.
After the first set, the match was playing out as the seedings suggested. Oklahoma State's Julian Cash and Arjun Kadhe won the first frame 6-1. But, Princeton's pair won the second set 6-3, forcing a pro-set style tiebreak for the third set. The Tiger duo won that too, 13-11.
"I think we were pretty confident going into the third set because we played some really good tennis in the last four or five games of the second set," Gamble said. "(We had to) just keep on doing what we were doing."
Cash and Kadhe made the quarterfinals of the NCAA doubles tournament last spring. Day and Gamble played together five times in 2014-15, when Gamble was a freshman and Day a sophomore, going 4-1, and played together 33 times in 2015-16, going 20-13 overall and 3-0 against ITA-ranked pairs with their highest-ranked win against No. 44 Nicky Hu and Brian Yeung of Harvard in April.
Day and Gamble broke into the rankings after that win, first at No. 86 and then at No. 76 before ending the season at No. 56. When this fall's preseason rankings came out in September, there Day and Gamble were at No. 21. The last time a Princeton pair ended a spring ranked that highly was in 1991, when Greg Hartch '92 and Andrew Weiss '94 finished at No. 18.
"It looks good on paper, but it's just preseason rankings," Day said. "They don't really mean much."
The Tiger pair were reminded of that this fall, when an up-and-down start led to a 2-3 record with none of the matches coming against ITA-ranked opponents.
Day and Gamble will head to the round of 16 Friday at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT where they'll face unranked Gergely Madarasz and Ricardo Medinilla of Purdue. And, they'll head there with a bump of confidence.
"You've still got to go out there and prove yourselves," Day said. "And I think that's what we did today."
