Princeton Doubles Up Brown in Shots But Falls 1-0
October 08, 2016 | Men's Soccer
A goal in the 53rd minute by Louis Zingas was the difference maker in the second weekend of Ivy League men's soccer action as Brown defeated Princeton 1-0 on a soggy Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The Tigers more than doubled up the Bears in shots, 21-10, but couldn't find the elusive equalizer before time ran out.
Zingas collected his first goal of the season after getting a cross from Nate Pomeroy. Nico Lozada started the play pushing the ball down the center of the field before pushing it ahead to Pomeroy. Princeton's defender slipped on the wet surface near the right post and wasn't able to prevent Zingas from taking the shot.
Overall the Princeton defense played excellent, allowing just two total shots on goal all evening. Senior Josh Haberman had to make just one save in goal for the Tigers.
The Tigers offense was relentless as the kept pressuring and had quality chance after chance. Erik Hanson had to make eight saves for the Bears.
"We did have a little bit of a rough start today, but we weathered it towards the end of the first half and felt pretty good about things," Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. "At the beginning of the second half we felt really good about things. But one counter did us in. We didn't handle that play well in several areas but I give Brown credit too. We had stretches where we had really great chances. We thought the goal was coming. They are a tough team to break through, their organized in the back and they chase and I give them credit for keeping us off the scoreboard because I thought we could have had several goals tonight."
Senior Greg Seifert had the most chances for the Tigers, with seven shots and three on target. He hit the crossbar in the 61st minute and then had his rebound blocked. He had another excellent chance when he took a bicycle kick on a Henry Martin thrown-in from inside the 6-yard box that surprised Hanson but he was in the right place to grab the ball and keep the clean sheet.
The Tigers take on in-state rival Rutgers on Tuesday night, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m., in Piscataway. Up next in Ivy League action will be Columbia, on the road a week from today.
