Tiger Rookies Win Flight Finals as Farnsworth Wraps
October 09, 2016 | Men's Tennis
All three members of the three-player Princeton freshman class walked away with flight titles Sunday as Payton Holden, Davey Roberts and Eduardo Paz won their draws to close the Farnsworth Invitational.
"It was a productive event for us," Princeton head coach Billy Pate said. "We were very pleased to see the three freshmen win their respective flights. They showed a great deal of poise while also demonstrating their ability to win close matches. We won 20 of 25 singles matches played this weekend with also some positive doubles results. We have a few injuries that need attention, but we'll give these guys some time to recover and then prepare for our regional championship at Penn starting in 11 days."
In the Nassau Draw, Payton Holden rallied from a first-set defeat against Drexel's Sinan Orhan to take the second set 6-3 and overcome being down a break to win the third set 7-5. Davey Roberts followed a similar path to win the Cordish Draw over Andrei Crapcenco of St. John's, falling 6-4 in the first set before winning the second set 6-4 and overcoming a 4-0 third-set deficit to win 6-4.
Eduardo Paz picked up a straight-set win over Marist's Carlos Moreno, 6-4, 6-4, to take the Pagoda Draw title. The rookies were three of Princeton's four flight finalists, with Ben Tso advancing to the Lenz Draw final before St. John's' Duzan Vukicevic won there, 6-4, 7-6(3).
Princeton's Sunday results are below and updated draws are available here. The Tigers will be away from competition next weekend before the ITA/USTA Northeast Regionals head to Penn beginning Oct. 20.
