Senior Alexandra Markovich guided the Princeton women's cross country team to an eighth-place finish at the 2016 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional at Penn State this afternoon.
Markovich, who has been the Tigers' consistent No. 1 runner all season, finished 25th overall with a time of 21:19 on the 6k course. Junior Melissa Reed and sophomore Alie Fordyce finished within two seconds of each other at 21:41 and 21:43. Sophomore Brighie Leach was in the top 50 taking 48th at 21:53 while the final scorer freshman Rachel Granovsky was 51st at 21:55.
Sophomore Allie Klimkiewicz wasn't far back, three seconds in fact, as the No. 6. Junior Melinda Renuart rounded out the runners with a time of 22:37.
"Today we posted a :37 spread from 1-5, the tightest pack of any team in the race," head coach Brad Hunt said. "As we look towards the future, we firmly believe we ended on a positive note. I am very proud of the group, as they have been resilient and optimistic despite the unique challenge of competing without the forecasted top 2 performers all season. Princeton Cross Country will return six of seven from today, and nine of our top 12 from the Ivy Heps team. The future is very bright, as we welcome a talented and versatile incoming class that will add to our depth and more experienced squad. Thank you to the Princeton faithful for all the support of this special group of women!"
Penn State and Villanova earned the automatic bids out the region to the NCAA Championships with Penn State winning with 36 points with the top individual runner.
