2-1 Victory Sends No. 14 Princeton To NCAA Quarterfinals
November 12, 2016 | Field Hockey
UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Behind a three-point outing from senior Cat Caro and a six-save performance from freshman Grace Baylis, the No. 14 Princeton Tigers advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second straight season with a 2-1 victory over the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions.
The game's first scoring chance came in the sixth minute as Baylis stopped two consecutive Nittany Lions' shots. In the 13th minute, Penn State's Brooke Birosik looked to have a clean attempt at the back of the cage, but freshman Maddie Bacskai prevented the ball from getting through.
Just a minute later, the Tigers had a great scoring opportunity as junior Ryan McCarthy went streaking down the sideline. The first team All-Ivy player blasted a shot towards the goal, but freshman Krista Hoffman's deflection was just off the mark.
Princeton created more scoring threats right before the intermission. Caro ripped a ball that was sent wide with 19 seconds to go. On the next trip down the field, the Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year laced an attempt that was to the right of the cage.
Each team had five shots each in the first 35 minutes of game action while the Ntttany Lions had a 3-2 advantage in corners.
Three minutes into the second half, sophomore Nicole Catalino found loose ball in the midfield and sent a pass to McCarthy, who drilled a shot at Penn State's goalie Jenny Rizzo, but Rizzo kicked it aside.
After some quick passes between each other, Caro and McCarthy helped put the Tigers up with 24:15 left in the contest. Caro threw a pass towards the cage and McCarthy showed a great individual effort, sliding across and slicing the pass behind Rizzo.
"I saw Cat open on the end line and I knew if she was going towards the end line, I have to get to the net," said McCarthy, describing how her goal developed. "I ran in and she (Caro) gave a perfect pass and I just tapped it in."
As the clock ticked under 10 minutes to go, Caro registered her 16th goal of the season off several deflected passes following a corner.
Trailing by two, Penn State turned up the offensive intensity, sending five shots towards Baylis over the next five minutes. The freshman stood her ground making two saves while Catalino also came up with a defensive save.
The Nittany Lions broke through with 3:28 remaining off a corner. Aurelia Meijer cut the home team's deficit to one as she nailed one into the cage with assists from Kirsten Gochnauer and Moira Putsch.
The Princeton defense managed to hold Penn State without a shot the rest of way to advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 15th time in program history. Penn State finished with six more shot attempts (15-9) and corners (7-4). The Tigers will play the winner of the Michigan/Virginia contest tomorrow at 2 p.m.
