The first East Coast game of the year for the Princeton men's basketball team was a point apart in the final minutes, but a late Lehigh spurt tipped it to the Mountain Hawks, 76-67.
Lehigh shot 56.5 percent from the field and went 10 of 16 from 3-point range to fuel the win, outdoing Princeton's 41-percent field goal clip and 6 of 18 from 3. That, and a slight 32-27 rebounding edge, helped negate 19 Mountain Hawk turnovers to 11 giveaways for Princeton.
Henry Caruso had 18 points to lead Princeton while senior classmate Steven Cook joined him in double figures with 15. Tim Kempton led all scorers with 24 points for Lehigh as part of a double-double afternoon with 11 rebounds. Jordan Cohen (20 points) and Austin Price (14) were also in double figures for Lehigh.
Lehigh scored seven of the game's first nine points, putting the Tigers in pursuit until a Cook 3-pointer pulled Princeton even at 21-21 with less than nine minutes to go before the break. Though the Tigers got out in front by two on a pair of Caruso free throws to make it 28-26, it took an Amir Bell buzzer-beating banked 3-pointer to send Princeton and Lehigh into the break tied 34-34.
The Mountain Hawks started the second half on an 8-0 run and held a multi-possession lead until an 10-2 Princeton run pulled the Tigers within 64-63 on a Caruso drive to the basket with 3:45 left. The rally stalled there, however, and a Kempton-converted and-1 chance with 1:54 to go put Lehigh on a string of 10 points to put the game away.
Princeton will head back into Patriot League territory Wednesday when they return to the Lehigh Valley to face Lafayette on for a Thanksgiving-eve 7 p.m. start.
