Season Recap: Princeton Advances To Seventh Final Four In Program History

Here's a recap of the field hockey team's memorable 2016 season…
Signature Wins: Traveling on the road for the first round of the NCAA Tournament was no daunting task for Princeton. The Tigers, behind a three-point outing from senior Cat Caro and a six-save performance from freshman Grace Baylis, advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the second straight season with a 2-1 victory over the No. 5 Penn State Nittany Lions on Nov. 12.
One day after upsetting No. 5 Penn State, Princeton outdid itself again with a thrilling 3-2 victory over No. 7 Virginia (Nov. 13), propelling into the NCAA Final Four. Sophomore Sophia Tornetta laced a shot into the back of the cage as time expired.

Notes: Caro's 18 goals and 43 points led the Tigers and were also a career-high … The senior captain ranked eighth in the country in goals per game (0.96) and 13th in points per game (2.26) … McCarthy placed inside the top 40 nationally in both categories … After scoring just 12 times in her first two seasons, McCarthy broke through with 14 tallies this year … The junior also led the team with five game-winning goals … Princeton placed in the top 20 in Division I in assists (11th, 2.60), points (12th, 8.8), goals per game (13th, 3.1), scoring average (14th, 3.03), scoring margin (14th, 1.42) and goals against average (17th, 1.61) … Assistant coach Dina Rizzo was selected to the USA Field Hockey Hall of Fame (Oct. 3) … Maddie Bacskai, Cat Caro and Sophia Tornetta were selected to the U-21 USA Junior World Cup roster (Oct. 4).
