Outscoring Hampton by 26 points in the second half, the Princeton men's basketball team pulled away for a 77-49 win over the Pirates in Princeton's second-to-last game before the Ivy League season begins a week from Saturday against Penn in Jadwin Gym.
Princeton took a 35-33 lead into the break on a tip-in at the halftime buzzer by Alec Brennan to close a first half that saw Princeton shoot 42.9 percent from the field and hit six 3-pointers but also had Hampton going to the line nearly three times as often as Princeton. Hampton went 13 of 17 from the stripe in the opening half to 5 of 6 for Princeton, helping to make up for a 36 percent shooting clip from the field for the Pirates in the opening 20 minutes.
Hampton was within three points at 41-38 with less than six minutes gone in the second half, but Princeton took off on a 17-4 run to push its lead to 16 points on a Steven Cook 3-pointer to make it 58-42 with less than nine minutes to go in the game. That was part of a larger 36-8 run as Princeton's lead reached its peak at 31 on a Mike LeBlanc 3-pointer with 1:18 to go.
Princeton went to the free-throw line 15 times after the break, making 12, while limiting Hampton to just 4 of 5 from the stripe in the second half. The Tigers also forced 12 Hampton second-half turnovers while committing just one after halftime.
Spencer Weisz led all scorers with 17 points and added seven rebounds while Steven Cook had a team-high eight rebounds to go with his 13 points. Myles Stephens (12) and Devin Cannady (10) joined Weisz and Cook in double figures, and Jermaine Marrow led Hampton with 16 points as the only Pirate in double figures.
Weisz's 17 points matched his season-best total set Dec. 7 against Hawai'i, and his five steals and five 3-pointers set or tied his career-best numbers.
Princeton will close both 2016 and the non-conference slate Saturday at 1 p.m. against Cal Poly in Jadwin Gym.
