Closing out 2016 on a three-game winning streak, the Princeton men's basketball team led Cal Poly by 17 at the half and kept on going after the break in an 81-52 victory Saturday afternoon in Jadwin Gym.
Steven Cook led the Tigers with 24 points and Devin Cannady added 10 as Spencer Weisz again came close to a triple-double with nine points, a game-high eight rebounds and a game-high seven assists.
Princeton kept the Cal Poly roster without a double-figure scorer, with Ridge Shipley, Kyle Toth and Donovan Fields netting eight points apiece.
Princeton's lead reached double figures for the first time on a Steven Cook 3-pointer just before the midway point of the half to go up 20-10, and that bucket started the Tigers on a 21-11 run to close the break. Devin Cannady's 3-pointer to beat the halftime buzzer put the Princeton lead at a then-high of 17 points at 38-21.
Cook hit a 3-pointer on Princeton's first possession of the second half, and from that point, the Mustangs were no closer than 14 points on a Jakub Niziol 3-pointer with 11-plus minutes left in the game. Princeton answered that basket by scoring six of the next nine points to push the lead back to 20, and the Tigers were up by as many as 32 on a Richmond Aririguzoh basket with a little more than two minutes left.
Princeton outshot Cal Poly 56.4 percent to 36.4 percent for the game and doubled up the Mustangs on the glass, 42-21.
The game was the pre-conference opener for both teams, each of which will start league play next Saturday. While Cal Poly returns to the Golden State to open the Big West slate against UC Davis, the Tigers will welcome Penn to Jadwin Gym for a 7 p.m. tip that will be shown on Comcast Sportsnet Philadelphia as well as on the Ivy League Digital Network.
