Monica McGrath, Corey Okubo, Tyler Lin, and Zach Buerger each posted Sunday victories for the Princeton swimming and diving teams to conclude the final day of the 2016 Bruno Invitational. Though neither Tiger team came away with the victory, both left feeling that they could build on the weekend as they move forward in their respective Ivy League seasons.
Those seasons will continue Friday when both travel to New York City to take on Columbia in dual meets.
The Tiger women, who battled illness, injury and a driven Brown squad throughout the weekend, opened their Sunday session with yet another victory from McGrath, who has now won at least one event in every competition of the season. McGrath won the mile in 16:48.78, while junior teammate Mary Kate Davis took fifth in 17:06.59.
Reigning Ivy League champion Lindsay Temple topped her conference opponents in the 200 back in a time of 1:57.70, while freshman teammate Christie Chong placed third in 1:58.13. Freshman Shaelyn Choi took fourth in the 200 breast in 2:20.41, while the sophomore duo of Isabel Reis (2:00.35) and Joanna Curry (2:01.58) finished 3-4 in the 200 fly.
Reis, Maddy Veith, Temple and McGrath ended the weekend with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay in 3:23.74.
The Princeton men opened with a fourth-place finish for Murphy McQuet in the mile (15:47.59), but Okubo followed with a win in the 200 back in 1:44.72. Okubo was one of five Tigers who finished in the Top 7, a group that included Cole Buese (3rd, 1:45.89) and Sam Cuthbert (5th, 1:48.67). After Ben Schafer took fourth in the 100 free (44.57), Lin gave Princeton its second win of the night by going 1:59.85 in the 200 back. He topped the rest of the field by nearly two full seconds to take the win.
The Tigers rounded out the individual racing with Buerger's win in the 200 fly; his time of 1:46.80 barely edged Okubo (1:46.93) in one of the most exciting finals of the weekend. Sam Cuthbert, Schafer, Alex Lewis, and Jon Spires finished second in the 400 free relay in 3:01.49.
Brown took the women's meet with 1122.5 points, while Princeton finished second with 962.5 points, and Rutgers finished third with 825.5. Brown won the men's competition with 1079.5 points, while Princeton finished second with 918, and Columbia took third with 668.5.
