Top-4 Individual Showdown, Home Opener Highlight Upcoming Wrestling Weekend
December 08, 2016 | Wrestling
Listen To Chris Ayres on TigerCast
The Princeton wrestling team will take on a pair of EIWA rivals this weekend, including a Friday night showdown at No. 11 Lehigh that will feature one of the biggest individual matches in the nation this weekend. Returning All-American and two-time EIWA champion Randy Cruz of Lehigh, currently ranked third nationally, will take on Princeton freshman Matthew Kolodzik, who is currently 10-0 during his young career and stands one spot behind Cruz in the national poll.
That is far from the only highlight match Friday night, as either or both teams have a projected starter ranked in the Top 20 in nine of the 10 weights. Other potential all-ranked showdowns could come at 149 (Lehigh's 9th-ranked Laike Gardner vs. Princeton's 17th-ranked Jordan Laster), 174 (Lehigh's 13th-ranked Ryan Preisch vs. Princeton's 19th-ranked Jonathan Schleifer), and 285 (Lehigh's 11th-ranked Doug Vollaro vs. Princeton's 19th-ranked Ray O'Donnell). The match should be especially meaningful for O'Donnell, a 2016 NCAA qualifier who grew up in Bethlehem, Pa.
Lehigh leads the overall series 52-5-1 and has won each of the last 12, including a 33-3 win in Dillon Gym last season. You can watch the match on the Patriot League Network.
On Saturday, Princeton will make its 2016-17 home debut when it hosts Binghamton at 1 pm. The Bearcats, who will wrestle Hofstra Friday night and reigning NCAA champion Penn State on Sunday, have only wrestled in tournaments leading up to this weekend. Princeton will try to avenge a tough 18-15 loss at Binghamton last season, when the Tigers had to forfeit at 125 and lost a pair of overtime matches.
You can watch the match on the Ivy League Digital Network.
