PRINCETON – Coming into tonight's action, there were three Ivy League teams with one conference loss or fewer, but that changed after the Princeton women's basketball team's (16-4, 5-1 Ivy) decisive 71-51 victory over the Cornell Big Red (13-8, 5-2 Ivy) on Friday evening at the Jadwin Gymnasium.
The Tigers used a balanced offensive attack with six players contributing at least seven points. Senior Annie Tarakchian led the way with 12 points and six rebounds while Michelle Miller secured 11 points, four rebounds and four assists. After reaching the 1,000-point milestone on Sunday, senior Alex Wheatley had 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
After taking a 32-26 advantage at the half, the Tigers used a strong offensive effort in the third quarter, sinking 8-of-16 (50 percent) from the floor to outscore the Big Red by 14. Princeton also held Cornell to just three made baskets in the frame and never looked back.
Game Notes:
- Looking back at the five things to watch out for this weekend (Article), one of them was stopping Cornell's Nia Marshall. Marshall, who came into tonight's game as the Ivy League's leading scorer (17.8), was held to 3-of-13 shooting (23.1 percent) for seven points, her second lowest total of the season.
- Cornell ranked last in the Ivy League in three-point defense (33.3 percent). Princeton made 6-of-13 from beyond the arc.
- The Tigers continued their stellar rebounding prowess, outrebounding the Big Red, 45-27. Six Tigers grabbed at least four rebounds. Head coach Courtney Banghart's squad has outrebounded its opponent in 18 of 20 outings.
- After not going to free-throw line in the first half, Princeton got to the charity stripe 13 times in the second half, making nine.
- The Tigers have not lost in 10 home games this year and have rattled off 22 consecutive victories at Carril Court. The team's last loss at home was an 80-64 decision to Penn on Mar. 11, 2014. Princeton is 46-16 (.742) against Columbia and has 14 straight against the Lions.
