With Round 2 between Princeton and Columbia looming Friday and a big win over Yale just in the rear-view mirror, the Princeton men's basketball team had to hold serve Saturday against Brown.
Leading by as many as 25 points, the Tigers did just that, defeating the Bears 77-66 to improve to 8-1 in the Ivy League and 18-5 overall. Both Columbia and Yale also won their games Saturday night, setting up another showdown with the Lions in Jadwin Gym. Yale remains the leader at 9-1 in league play with Princeton next at 8-1 and Columbia at 8-2. No other team is within three and a half games of the Lions with just four games left for everyone but Penn and Princeton, which have five left.
Brown got out to an early 6-2 lead before Princeton went on a 13-2 run to go ahead 15-9 on an Alec Brennan 3-pointer just more than seven minutes into the game. The Tigers soon built on that with a 13-0 run to go ahead by 18 points at 35-17 with just less than four minutes before halftime on a Henry Caruso triple.
Caruso and Steven Cook co-led Princeton with 14 points apiece as the Tigers shot 50 percent from the field and just short of that from 3-point range, hitting 11 of 24 tries from distance. Spencer Weisz and Devin Cannady were also in double figures with 10 points apiece.
Cedric Kuakumensah led all scorers and four Brown players in double figures with 18 points, with Steven Speith getting a double-double on 12 points and 11 boards for the Bears.
After halftime, though Princeton's lead grew as large as 25 with less than nine minutes to go, Brown kept Princeton off the board for nearly four minutes during a 10-0 run to cut the deficit to 15 points with less than five minutes to go, but the Bears got no closer than the 11-point margin at the end.
