BETHESDA, Md. – The Princeton baseball team sent today's tilt vs. the Georgetown Hoyas into extra innings with two runs in the ninth, but the Hoyas walked off with a 4-3 decision at Shirley Povich Field on Thursday afternoon.
Facing the Hoyas' closer David Ellingson, who had not given up an earned run in six appearances, in its last at-bat seemed to be a daunting task for Princeton, trailing 3-1, however senior Danny Hoy greeted Ellingson with a home run to start the frame.
After back-to-back walks, a sacrifice bunt moved the Tigers' runners to second and third before junior Zack Belski was then intentionally walked to load the bases. Freshmen Max Machiorlette, down 1-2 in the count, showed a stellar eye at the plate to work an eight-pitch walk to tied game at 3-all.
Georgetown would take the contest in the 10th inning on a walk-off single by Chase Bushor with two out. Tim Davis picked up the win for the home team, not allowing a run in two innings of work while senior Danny Thomson suffered the loss despite only giving up one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Four different Tigers tallied a hit in the contest with Hoy's home run providing the theatrics. Junior Nick Hernandez touched home twice in the loss.
Princeton's starting pitcher, junior Keelan Smithers, got two double plays in the first two Hoyas' at-bats and then sent Georgetown down in order in the third frame. In the fourth inning, the Tigers threw a runner out at the plate to keep the score tied at zero.
The Tigers had its first runner in scoring position in the sixth inning, but a ground out ended the threat. In the next half-inning, Bushor hit a two-run blast to give Georgetown a 2-0 advantage.
Hernandez singled up the middle with one out in the seventh inning for Princeton's first hit. The junior eventually scored three batters later on a wild pitch to cut the Tigers' deficit in half. A wild pitch gave Georgetown an insurance tally in its next at-bat before a thrilling ninth and 10th innings.
These two teams will go at it again tomorrow at 3 p.m. Senior Luke Strieber is on the hill for Princeton, looking to build on his victory against Penn State last Saturday (Mar. 12). The senior went six innings, gave two earned runs and struck out six batters as the Tigers recorded their first win of the season.
