April 23, 2016 | Baseball
NEW YORK – The Princeton baseball team worked a split against the Columbia Lions on Saturday afternoon at Robertston Field at Satow Stadium. The Lions won game one, 8-4 while the Tigers were victorious in game two, 6-2.
Columbia 8, Princeton 4 - Box Score
Senior Danny Hoy had his sixth multi-RBI game of the season as he knocked in three Tigers and snagged three hits. The second baseman extended his on-base streak to nine in the contest.
Senior Cameron Mingo retired 10 straight Lions' hitters before running into the trouble with two outs in the fourth. Randell Kanemaru singled and then stole second. The next hitter, Nick Maguire, doubled to center field that allowed Kanemaru to touch home to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.
In the fifth, sophomore Asher Lee-Tyson tied the Ivy League matchup on a RBI double that scored junior Danny Baer. Two batters later, Hoy laced a base hit through the left side to give Princeton a 2-1 advantage.
Columbia broke the contest open with a five-run fifth inning, highlighted by a grand slam from Robb Paller. The Lions added two more runs in the sixth to make the score, 8-2. A Hoy two-run double in the seventh was all the Tigers could put together as Princeton fell, 8-4.
Princeton 6, Columbia 2 - Box Score
Freshman Jesper Horsted's four hits highlighted Princeton's offense. Senior Billy Arendt and junior Nick Hernandez also had multi-hit outings in the win. Junior Chad Powers went all nine innings, scattering just three hits.
In the second, freshman Joseph Flynn got on base to lead off the frame on an error. Following back-to-back strikeouts, Lee-Tyson moved Flynn to third base on a single for the top of Princeton order. Horsted came through with the two-out hit to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Back-to-back RBI singles by Hernandez and junior Zack Belski in the fifth inning would give the visitors two more insurance tallies. A walk and run-producing hit by junior Paul Tupper made the score 5-0 in the seventh. Arendt posted a RBI hit in the eighth to finish the scoring for Princeton.
Between the third through fifth innings, Powers allowed just one infield single. That runner was quickly erased on a caught stealing. The Lions had a hit in the sixth, but couldn't put together a rally. Powers got another clean frame in the seventh and eighth innings, but lost his shutout bid in the ninth.
The two Ivy League teams will get right back at it tomorrow for a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled for 12 p.m. and will be a seven-inning affair. Game two will be nine innings and start about a half hour after the first.
