No. 16 Women's Water Polo Drops Two to Begin CWPA Play

ANN ARBOR, MICH. – The No. 16 Princeton women's water polo team fell to the No. 8 Michigan Wolverines, 9-7, and to the No. 15 Indiana Hoosiers, 8-7, to begin Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) play at the Canham Natatorium on Saturday. The Tigers will take on No. 13 Harvard tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Freshman Lindsey Kelleher had a team-high five points with two goals and three assists. Sophomore Haley Wan posted a four-point outing (two goals and two assists) while senior Pippa Temple recorded two goals and one assist. Sophomore goalie Helena van Brande had two saves and two steals in the loss.
It took the Tigers just one possession to get the scoring started. After a long pass from van Brande, Wan found junior Morgan Hallock right in front of the net, who slipped it by the Michigan goaltender to put Princeton in front, 1-0.
Wan converted her first goal of the CWPA matchup at the 3:41 mark of the first period on a five-meter penalty shot to give the Tigers a 2-0 advantage. The Wolverines tallied the next two goals to tie the game at 2-all after one quarter.
Senior Pippa Temple snagged a goal to begin the second frame, giving the Tigers a brief 3-2 lead, but Michigan countered with two goals 37 seconds apart to jump ahead, 4-3. The Wolverines tacked on another tally to take a 5-3 advantage into halftime.
Following two goals by the Wolverines to open the second half, Kelleher would bring Princeton within three at 7-4 at the 4:23 mark. Wan threw in her second tally on the power play as the clock was running out to end the period, cutting the Tigers' deficit to two (7-5).
Temple would keep the comeback going with her second goal of the game to set the score at 7-6 with 5:25 remaining, but the home team quickly re-upped its lead 17 seconds later (8-6). Kelleher made it a one-goal contest again, but the Wolverines kept the offensive pressure up with another goal on its next possession. The Tigers couldn't add on over the final three minutes, dropping the close CWPA contest.

Less than a minute after No. 15 Indiana jumped in front, Temple connected with Wan, who got it past the Hoosiers' goaltender to tie the contest at 1-all with 5:33 left in the first quarter. The Princeton goaltender, van Brande, made three straight saves to keep the contest squared at one before Hallock swam past everyone and scored on a 1v1 against the Indiana goalie to lead 2-1 after the first eight minutes of game time.
After the Hoosiers tied the contest at 2-all, Temple deposited one in the back of the net to take a 3-2 advantage. The back and forth battle continued as the Hoosiers retied the CWPA contest again 37 seconds after. The score would remain at 3-all at halftime.
The Hoosiers took their second lead of the game as they connected on one 25 seconds into the third quarter. Indiana improved its lead at the 3:06 mark to make the score 5-3, but Kelleher secured a tally with 2:16 to go in the frame. The Hoosiers had a 6-4 lead heading into the final eight minutes of action.
The two CWPA rivals exchanged goals to begin the fourth quarter with tallies from Wan and Kelleher setting the score at 7-6 Indiana with 6:28 to go in the game. A power play goal from the Hoosiers push their lead back to two at the 3:33 point of the fourth. Britt recorded a key goal to cut the Princeton deficit in half with one-minute left. Princeton had one final power play with 19 seconds to go, but couldn't get the game-tying goal.
