EUGENE, Ore. (7/10/16) - Princeton assistant distance coach Robby Andrews has made the US Olympic Team!
A native of Manalapan, N.J., Andrews is coached by Princeton head cross country coach Jason Vigilante and sees his Olympic dream come true for the first time, as he finished second in the 1500 on the final day of the US Olympic Track & Field Trials at Historic Hayward Field.
Andrews entered the race already holding the Olympic standard and like he did in the preliminary and the semifinal round took his position near the back of the pack for the first portion of the race. Out of sight, certainly not out of mind. At the bell, Andrews had moved into fifth behind 2012 Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano, Izaic Yorks, Ben Blankenship and 2012 Olympian Matthew Centrowitz.
Manzano and Andrews both snuck past York on the backstretch around 300 meters and at 200 meters, Andrews' kick sent him past Manzano. At the Bowerman curve he had overpowered Blakenship for second place.
Centrowitz won with a trial record of 3:34.09, followed by Andrews at 3:34.88 and then Blankenship at 3:36.18, leaving silver medalist Manzano off the roster. A protest has been lodged due to a yellow flag earlier in the race when there was some nudging but Andrews was not involved.
A two-time NCAA Champion and Bowerman Trophy semifinalist while at Virginia, Andrews joined the coaching staff in 2013.
Also competing for the Tigers today was alum and current assistant jumps coach Justin Frick '10. Frick reached the finals of the high jump after clearing 2.14 on Friday in the rain. Today unfortunately Frick would not be able to clear the height of 2.16 (7-1), one of five that would not, to finish tied for 10th.
